Grace period for Riley?

Well his predecessors all won their division in or by year 3. If he doesn't win the division this year I think the writing is on the wall. Frank and Bo did it in year 2, Callahan in year 3. This isn't an accomplishment, it should be an expectation at Nebraska. We should be in the ccg at the very least 66% of the time.

Osborne didn't.

So let me see if I am following your logic.

Riley shouldn't have hired Banker.

Riley isn't necessarily making the right decision in firing coaches, (that shouldn't have been hired to begin with)

But because the defense improved from bottom third to middle third, Banker should be given more time, because he hasn't bottomed out yet.

Firing willy nilly gives the impression that it was just random, throw a dart a some pictures. Not sure that is the case.

Do you have examples of some willy nilly firings for me to review? I like to look into these sort of things. Just looking for say 10 situations where a college head coach went willy nilly and fired a staff member so we can determine if the replacement was better or the original hire was better.
There's no logic to be followed. I feel it's odd to fire a coach who's shown significant improvement, even though I may not agree he should have been hired in the first place.

I'm sure there is more behind-the-scenes to this. Yes the def. Improved a little but it seemed as if he lost the locker room a bit. And from what we can read his recruiting wasn't up to par. This is a big hire and I think the def. Will be better right away. IMHO
GBR!

I've been skeptical of the Riley hire since the beginning primarily because of his career record but I have been super impressed and happy with the changes he's made recently. I wasn't a fan of Hughes, Banker or Read when they were hired and was really hoping they'd get some terrific recruiters or a big name defensive coordinator. Bringing those three along and the career record of Riley made me skeptical. The bad losses year 1 didn't help. I decided that I'd remain open minded and not jump firmly into one camp or the other until signing day and just let the season play out.

With that being said, the changes that he's made recently have won me over entirely. Donte Williams looks like a great hire. Bob Diaco is a home run hire for a coordinator. I am now super excited to see who they land to replace Stewart. I didn't know anything about Keith Williams when he was initially hired but he's been great as a recruiter and is clearly well respected throughout the country. I'm hopeful they can land one more excellent recruiter so that we can continue to see the talent level improve. I'm also very excited to see the 3-4 defense in Lincoln and hopefully start seeing some impact pass rushers.

Yes Riley must win but keep winning some recruiting battles with teams like Ohio State for top tier players and you'll turn this ship around quicker than expected. Hoping that Williams and Diaco can land a couple impact defensive players before signing day. Really, really looking forward to next year's class knowing the recruiting talent has been significantly upgraded. GBR!

I'm curious if anyone's opinion changed on this topic with the hiring of Bob Diaco. Now we know Riley is willing to not only fire the coaches who aren't pulling their weight, but he's also not afraid to against other schools for the coach of his choice (Donte also). I really think Riley has bought himself a good 3-4 years at least with the way he's handling personnel and recruiting IMO

positive signs, yes, but the play on the field is really all that matters in the end.

Agree with this. But does he buy himself any wiggle room if the coaching improves and the talent improves but the record doesn't? Other programs in the B1G are improving as well...

i concern myself less with record and more with how they look. We won 6 last year and 9 this year. Basically the same quality of team. other thing is do they improve throughout the season - is there a sense of progress?
