Good Article on DC Butler

I’m sure he’ll be given a fair chance at being a worthy successor until he proves otherwise.

Of course, criticism will be considered a violation against the “Nebraska way” by retards such as @Laner2 and @headcard when they’re justifying a loss against Maryland or Minnesota en route to another 7 win season.

I'm expecting (damn near demanding) that Nebraska put an offense that can score and competent special teams on the field so our defense doesn't once again have zero margin for error. Looking forward to seeing Keona Davis and Van Poppel.

I have no clue what to expect from the defense. I love some of the pieces but not sure on the run defense being as good. I do think we will be faster and more athletic. I'm also not sold on the "veterans" in our secondary outside of Wright. In a n nutshell I wasn't a fan of the Butler hire to begin with. Love that they brought Snow in though and that kinda eased my pain.

Will there be too many cooks in the kitchen? Well the secondary be able to hold up with these heavy blitz packages? Can the front 7 stuff the run? A lot of questions for me. But I'm hopeful..

Butler, Snow and the DB coach from UCF have all been DCs. Snow is free to coach and advise. They should have good plans for the roster they have.
Dline - RVP could be good, Jeudy should be solid, the kid from ETSU will play inside and they need one of the other big boys to step up and be able to be in the rotation. Nwaneri is a potential monster, Davis has experience and Cam L is a veteran. I think they can make something of that.
LBs/Jacks - If Shavers takes his play up a notch, he becomes a very solid B1G LB. Trent is a G5 all star. MaGahee has a nose for the football, and McCullough and Javin Wright are very athletic. And Dvoracek is a very good young coach.
DBs - There are several guys battling to be opposite Ceyair Wright. I like the way that Jones kid played in the bowl game. We may not be super excited about the older dudes playing safety, but Buford, Singleton and Hartzog have collectively started a lot of games. I wonder if Singleton doesn’t play Rover.

What encourages me is that if Butler fails, history shows that Rhule isn’t afraid to demote in season. Since we have others who have been in the DC chair before, Butler is coaching for his spot and can’t relax even for a moment.

At least that’s what I’m telling myself.

From what I’ve heard of Butler, he isn’t much of a relaxing type. I think things will be fine. White got the defense playing with good fundamentals. There are a lot of kids on that side of the ball with experience.

I feel you on that. But history tells me that IF an in season change has to be made then something has gone terribly wrong. That in itself isn't a good thing. I'll just be anxiously awaiting to see what we look like on defense. Everyone talks about us being a bit smaller up front. But I love the athletes we have up there. Honestly I'm more concerned with that secondary. Especially if we are as blitz happy as it appears we may be. Who do you like running man to man with a BIG level WR on our roster besides Wright? Hartzog? Singleton? Older Buford?

I'm honestly rooting like he'll for Donovan Jones, and the transfer Marshall to beat out some of these incumbent guys. I just don't have faith in them. Great just I believe just average football players imo.

Lots of truth in there. In the secondary I'm confident and comfortable with Wright. That's about it for me. Again if those guys were younger I'd feel better but we have been watching those other guys besides Jones for 3 years now. We need to be better back there. Especially if we are gonna be a more aggressive blitz team. Just my opinion of course. I like the LBs and the overall speead and athletes up front. Simply put I'm not a fan of who we have in the secondary if all we are doing is running it back with the same guys.

Rhule has hired 1 new coordinator per every 4 games he’s coached here

How many more can he afford to cycle through?

We didn’t even conduct a single competitive outside interview for the DC job this offseason for Christ’s sake

I wasn't a fan of the hire at the time. Risky imo compared to hiring someone proven. But that's over and we're moving towards the season so he gets my support. Hope he crushes it and proves me wrong.
I believe one thing Rhule deserves credit for is always putting together a decent defense, even at Carolina.

We were always on a ticking clock with Tony White, in a way it's almost a relief to rip that bandaid off.

It's also hard for me to forget how unsafe every 3rd and long felt under White's defense, single-handedly accounted for at least 2 L's last year.

I'm not at all surprised that Tony White left, that was inevitable. BUT I am surprised that he didn't leave to become a head coach somewhere. Seems like he left for a lateral job instead of a promotion and that surprised me.

The 3rd and long defense was excruciating. I got to the point I was wishing it was 3 and short to give opposing offenses something to think about in terms of either running the ball or passing.

3rd downs were definitely maddening. Also seemed like we struggled to generate turnovers.

Had the horses up front though.
Loved Ty and Hutch … but when taking off the Big Red sunglasses we had a 6th rounder and undrafted d-lineman. Both of them worked their tails off to do what they did and passed that same expectation on to the boys who are following them.

Point is - we have guys that will replace them and hopefully even be a step up. When this convo comes up it feels like people think we are replacing a 1st and 2nd rounder.

Ty was a 4th rounder

And nobody was able to unseat him for 6 straight years.

If we had better, they’d have been playing
