Gates

Barnett? Is a stud, considering no 1 st string QB,no 1 st sting receiver or safety to be down 7 with 4 minutes or so and driving ain't all bad.

Do your homework. Tenn didn't have 7 starters. The most banged up team. 11 starters were out at one point. We're missing 7 tonight. Had 4th and 5th DT playing.

I thought I was in before the infamous we were just 1 or 2 plays away :) or wait until next year when we have a QB that can't run.

Hell, Gates wasn't close enough to Barnett all night to even draw a holding penalty!
EXACTLY... IMO its poor Cav coaching. He needs to fire out and hit the opposing player, taking away his momentum and his favorite moves. If you can run block, you can do this. Then your opponent is down 2 or more seconds and you are still in front of him. You can easily still be legal as too position. This simply letting a guy use muscle twitch, or a speed move to get around you as you wave is crazy.

I too have doubts about Cav, but I disagree strongly with your suggested blocking change. I do not know of a single offensive line coach anywhere in America, from junior high to the NFL, who would teach what you suggest. On passing plays, unless you are blocking down to simulate a running play in order to set up play action, you always coach your tackle to stand up, set your feet properly, and then engage the pass rusher as he comes to you. This also allows you to see the defense's entire rushing scheme as it develops so that you are able to disengage from your guy and help out by chipping another rusher who has more of an angle.

should spend less time running his mouth and a little more time in the weight room. The next great lineman? I don't care who he is going against, he looks like a high-school kid out there. The Lincoln Journal should watch some game film before they start making these proclamations and the fan base should be more educated before they buy in to it.
Gates wasn't the only lineman getting beat, just the most obvious because of who he was up against. I really hope the red shirt OL have the talent to not only challenge next year but start. The right side needs more athletic talent. It has been a problem all year against average opponents. It really gets exposed when we play tOSU, Tennessees and even I hate to say this Iowa's.

I don’t really understand why they don’t block closer to the line of scrimmage on more pass plays. Like you said, they do that on play action and the qb usually seems to have more time on play action. You would think that blocking closer to the line of scrimmage could prevent a blitz from getting through. And if the rush does get through, the qb would be able to see it and have more time to react. I don’t see many lineman disengage to another rusher anyway. I always thought the reason they don’t block like that is the possibility of a lineman going downfield on a pass play.
