Garrett McGuire need to go?

I honestly think some of these hires were stubborn hires by Rhule. I honestly think he thought he could hire coaches with little experience and transform them in legit Power 4 coaches under his tutelage. I surely hope he has been humbled.
I still maintain Rhule is more concerned about his "coaching tree" than he is committed to winning.

He also can't recruit. All our guys are transfers. Parents can't take him seriously. We're not a make a wish coaching program.
McGuire’s replacement is likely already on staff. I honestly don’t believe he’s the biggest problem with our passing game.

Does rhule care about winning? Or does he care about taking care of his guys and being liked?

He’s already financially set for generations..

We’ll see what’s more important to him.

Well if he’s concerned with being liked he needs to start winning more games. Nobody likes a loser.

As for the OP, I have posted several times that the kid should go, even via demotion this week.

But I still wonder about the “program builder” Ruhle, which is the most important question. He was at two places for a handful of years, flipped the script mostly with inherited players, then left for a big job with more money/prestige. That’s exactly what Frost did at UCF and he did it at UCF even better. But we know how that bigger job turned out for Frost here and Ruhle at the Panthers. Isn’t it at least entirely possible we just hired another Frost, albeit one with better speaking skills (and perhaps better personal habits)?

So far I see a guy who could give great sermons on Sunday but can he build a long term program with 100% of his recruits here? He has never done that anywhere so it seems like an open question. Maybe we will know more about him if we don’t repeat 0 for November again. But if we go into the next couple years of really tough schedules with another 5-7 slate to improve upon, what’s the basis for great optimism?

BTW, I thought Solich was a terrible buddy hire but it’s amazing what 20 years of reflection can do to one’s opinion. Sorry, Frank!

I've been pretty critical. Barthel too.

You can almost give Rhule a pass for McGuire. He was a last minute hire after the MJ incident. But that gamble isn't working. As a group they can't get open and don't block. Rhule has to go out and hire an experienced dude at that spot.

That MJ ordeal is the gift that keeps on giving.
it was obvious that Barthel was no good last year.. I am surprised he was even retained.

Preacher has to show people he is serious about winning and holding people accountable.

I thought he was gone for sure.

I still want to see Rhule prove he can win 10 games in year 3 because I don't think he can. Too many teams in the BIG already have his number. If I'm wrong, I'll own it. The only way he has a snowball chance in hell is if he cleans house with multiple assistant coaches and brings in some proven talent to coach these positions up.
Not till then.

With all due respect I think TO or the Bobfather would have a tough time winning ten games with that 2025 schedule. Based on what I’ve seen, I think 6 or 7 is tops for the next couple seasons. The only slim chance to do much better would be to hit the portal hard and get top talent from there.

Luckily Michigan and USC seem to be in a rebuild, too, so perhaps 2025 schedule isn’t as bad as it looked a year ago.
