Ohio State has figured out how much NIL money they need to keep their current roster intact - the cost is about $13 million according to the head coach. Now theoretically schools cannot use NIL cash to recruit players but obviously there are legal ways around those rules if schools do it smartly.

FWIW, the minimum beginning price for any NIL deal for most men's and women's athletes is $30. You can pitch any NIL deal at that asking price.

I like the BYU NIL arrangement that pays all the tuition and room/board for all the team walk-ons. Those walk-ons put in just as much work as scholarship players, I'm glad to see them rewarded for their work.

Yes it certainly is. You just have to be smart about it but now you can get as many players legally paid as you have NIL sponsors. It can be like bringing that old tale about Nebraska County Scholarships in to reality.

I disagree. But I don’t believe in the “everyone gets a trophy” mentality nor am I a socialist.

I’d rather the money go to talent. If I’m going to invest in something, I’d like it to have a return

also be surprised if BYU has the number of walk-ons as we do. Don’t think we can have a ton of walk-ons just hanging around for the ship money. We need attrition with walk-ons

lastly, if these kids are working so hard on the football field, how about working that hard in the classroom and getting on academic scholarship. Something that will actually pay off for them later in life

Well I greatly admire the walk-on tradition at Nebraska. Not every walk-on succeeds (nor do all scholarship players) but there also have been some notable players over the years that started as walk-ons. And every walk-on works hard whether they're a star or not. Otherwise they wouldn't be on the team. It's a microcosm of the American dream to work hard and have a chance to excel.

If a business wants to pay walk ons tuition.

That has nothing to do with the school.

That's between the walk ons and the businesses.

You can't force businesses to pay for everyone because of Title 9.

They just have to be allowed to look for deals for themselves. But it's not about equality in ny form or fashion.

Why would they pay money for people's likeness they aren't using in any way?

I like that idea. Outside of the elite programs bringing in the highly rated kids who also have great character, there's an argument to be made to winning the numbers game. Get more young kids into the program and if you had the right coach, they're going to develop a fair number of them into decent players.
