Friday notebook: Nebraska's QB situation still unclear
***Nebraska had a laundry list of players sitting out for the first bowl practice. Here are the Huskers who were out with various injuries:
Tommy Armstrong, Terrell Newby, Alonzo Moore, Bryan Reimers, Cole Conrad, Marcus Newby, and Michael Rose-Ivey.
***Ryker Fyfe was able to practice but still wore a soft cast on his right hand.
***Head coach Mike Riley said as of now the team is preparing as if Fyfe will be the starter for the bowl game, but they haven’t ruled out Armstrong yet. Riley said they’re still gathering information about Armstrong’s status, but said he obviously suffered a “significant hamstring” injury and then had a setback when he returned to action vs. Iowa.
***Riley said Zack Darlington continues to work as the No. 2 quarterback behind Fyfe.
***Riley said Terrell Newby was dealing with a leg injury and is expected to play in the bowl game, while Moore has a nerve injury in his lower leg that forced him to miss the Iowa game. Riley said they’re hopeful Moore will be able to play.
***Riley said Rose-Ivey had a stiff back but should be fine, and added that Dylan Utter was able to go through individuals on Friday but cut the day short as he recovers from a leg injury. Riley said he expects Utter to be fine for the bowl game.
***Riley said Donte Williams fit everything they were looking for in a new assistant coach, both in terms of coaching and also as a recruiter. Riley added that they’re hoping to add a 10th full-time assistant in the spring when the NCAA changes the rule on the number of coaches allowed, and it would be an offensive coach.
***Williams met with reporters for the first time since taking the job, and he had glowing praise for the opportunity at Nebraska. He said he watched film of the Huskers before accepting the position, and said the talent of cornerbacks Joshua Kalu and Chris Jones immediately jumped out. Williams said the combination of size, length and skill those two possess was “pretty intriguing” and rare to find at the college level.
***Williams described himself as an energetic coach who could teach in a variety of ways. He said “I still think I’m 18 years old” and wears cleats and gloves to practices because he doesn’t expect his players to do anything he wouldn’t do.
***Asked about the reception he’s gotten on the recruiting trail since taking the job, Williams said it’s been “amazing” and when it comes to selling Nebraska in the living room, “There’s not much I have to sell, Nebraska sells itself.”
***Williams was asked if the past few days had been a whirlwind for him traveling on the road recruiting and then coming back to Lincoln for his first practice on Friday. He said no, adding: “If I don’t sleep for five days and the job still isn’t done, it doesn’t matter… I can sleep when I’m dead.”
