Friday, March 4th: Nebraska vs Northwestern State - (Huskers win 2-0)

The Huskers follow true to form and go 1-2-3 to start the game. NWS gets a two out single and a double but fortunately Frank settles in the get a K to end the inning to keep the game scoreless through one.

Another 1-2-3 inning for the Huskers. Leadoff double, WP, line out, a walk, and a HBP loads the bases with one out. However, a 6-4-3 double play gets Koty out of another jam. Scoreless through 2.

It really sounds like they butchered that call. Props to Frank for getting the double play ball after such a long break.

A two out double and single break the hitless streak but Everitt is thrown out trying to advance to 3rd on the single by Matthews.

Sartori robs a hit in the bottom of the 3rd as Koty works his first 1-2-3 inning.

Meanwhile Frank is getting hit around a little.

Unless theyre really squaring him I'm not worried about that, he's more of a contact pitcher. Not ideal for a Friday guy, but efficiency will work at this point.

Appreciate the explanation on Efry.

I agree, but I could go without the extra base hits.

Doesn't it feel amazing to have a pitcher go deep enough to actually factor into the decision? He's at 65 pitches, does he come back out for the 6th?

He only factors if he comes back out for an out so now that it's 2-0 he better come back for the 6th. He more than earned this win!

Matthews with a leadoff single to LF leads to an Everitt 2 run HR! Back to back singles from Chick and Banjoff puts runners on the corners but Gomes and Swansen go down in order to keep it a 2-0 game.

NSU goes scoreless in the bottom of the 6th.

I don't think so as long as NU would have held the lead. He's still only at 75 pitches through 6, I'd be tempted to run him back out there for the bottom third of their order.

Agree, 75 thru 6 is extremely low and he hasn't had many stress innings since the 2nd. Dude is cruising!

Here's why I'm confused, or it's possible I'm confusing myself.

Rule 9.17(a) Whenever the score is tied, the game becomes a new contest insofar as the winning pitcher is concerned. Once the opposing team assumes the lead, all pitchers who have pitched up to that point and have been replaced are excluded from being credited with the victory. If the pitcher against whose pitching the opposing team gained the lead continues to pitch until his team regains the lead, which it holds to the finish of the game, that pitcher shall be the winning pitcher.

If the pitcher was the starter, he can get credit for the win if the following conditions are met:

2. His team assumes the lead while he is in the game, or during the inning on offense in which he is removed from the game. (e.g., he pitches 6 innings with the score tied, and his team scores in the top of the 7th, and a new pitcher comes in for the bottom of the 7th).

Ah ha, I know where I'm screwing this up. It's a tie game. I'm thinking of us being down, let's see 2-0 after 5 complete then we take the lead in the top 6 with a new pitcher starting the bottom of 6. That's where the starter doesn't get credit for the win, it happened in 2021 a couple times.

Appreciate the answers, now back to the game. lol

It feels great to win a “Friday night” game Friday-night-style. Starter throws 6-2/3 shutout innings and his replacement gets 7 more outs without allowing anyone on base. Just what the doctor ordered for game one of four over two days.

The bats need to get going, though. And…UTA will be throwing its ace at 3:00, right?

Wong gets the ball in game one for UTA. I don't believe he's their ace, but he is 2-1 on the young season. At least 2 starts so far, but prior to 2022 he's been a reliever.

I'd like to see Jessen and Jackson in the lineup against a RHP.
