Anyone know if he bulked up any, got stronger lifting during the winter? I thought for sure the coaches would have both Davis twins and Stoltenberg starting at the same time.

Everyone is acting like you need JJ Watt, Gilbert Brown, and Sheldon Richardson to run this defense, which simply isn't the case. If the Nose and DEs aren't up to snuff, they'll just slant more and it will essentially be a 4 man front. This isn't rocket science.

Agree but he will also be a liability athletically, 3-4 move not a good fit for Freedom. Is what it is

He no longer has the same responsibilities as previously. He isn't going after the QB like a DE in the old system. He's trying to tie up the tackle and at times the guard. I believe he'll usually play head-up on the tackle. Like Tuco said, he needs to be big enough to keep the tackle engaged and off of the LBs.

He's must better suited to play a 3-4 DE than the 4-3. I never disagreed with a post more. Playing Defensive line in this scheme, in some ways, is more about hand to hand combat and physicality than it is about athleticism.
Stoltenburg, Freedom, and Carlos all have the ability to fight offensive linemen at the point of attack and keep them off the backers. Their role is to muck up everything at the point of attack.
I would prefer Freedom in that role, instead of him being an edge rusher.

This decision to shift towards the 3-4 was personnell driven.

Things I have learned the last couple days:

-A 4 star receiver that should still be in high school is too fat

-Freedom is too weak to play, and has no prayer.

-Nebraska fans are experts on the new defense 3 practices into Spring.

He didn't do much in the 4-3...let's see how he does in 3-4. Can't hurt.

We shall see on Freedom and Stolt in the 3-4...Stand by my previous post on Freedom.

If this is the case then khalil would be a better option to start.

I would have to think a large part of this decision is the fact that the NG is double-teamed a lot in the middle, and we will have to rotate the NG fairly frequently. If you put Khalil at DE, there really isn't anyone to 'spell' Stoltenberg.
