Fred should be fired today

I don't think our basketball program has much of an NIL budget. It seems like we get outbid for every big transfer recruit that visits here. Even the in-state guys like Sallis, Fidler, and Kyle. Or are they willing to take less NIL money to play for more established programs?

Regardless, Fred signed a very mediocre transfer class after a season where he was named National Coach of the year and made the NCAA tournament. So it's hard to imagine being better next year after the disappointing season this year.
Averages for transfers year before Nebraska:
Essegian 3.1
Berke 4.9
Meah 5.4
Griffiths 5.5
Ulis 3.1
Worster 9.9
Morgan 12.9

Worst transfer haul we could have had after making the tournament.

I will be looking closely at averages of new transfers. Doesn’t matter to me what level. You have to have guys who can make shots. Guards are premium in college.

Since Fred's hall pass is clearly stamped LACK OF NIL, should there be a different collective in Lincoln?

I would also love to know how much more NIL money Deivon Smith got than Rollie Worster. Maybe St. John's shelled out way more $ than NU did - I really don't know. But last spring Smith was the Utah guard that I wanted badly because he was actually an athletic point guard. Now Smith's going dancing as a #2 or #3 seed and the Huskers are limping into The Crown with the stellar trio of Worster, Sam and Ulis.
It would be very interesting to know the answer to that question. I remember a quote from Fred talking about the reason Rollie decided to come to Lincoln was some family connection to the state of Nebraska. I don't think he came to UNL because of any large NIL amount. I have to think the NIL basketball budget for St. John's and Pettino is significant. Even more than Creighton's. Plus with Matty A.'s slinky recruiting methods we probably don't want to know how Smith ended up at St. John's.

I'm starting to believe Nebraska has plenty of resources. Plenty of below average resources.
The challenge is our resources compared to the resources of the rest the schools in the BIG conference. Drake has a terrific coach but he is competing in the Missouri Valley Conference.

How much are their players making?
I don't know particulars about what each player is making but they are getting big NIL hauls from donors. There was an article in sports illustrated about their NIL pot getting huge. They also just updated facilities, although I think that was mostly for football.

I am not claiming that any success Tech is having this season compared to nebraska is due to NIL differences. I don't know. I just know that tech has huge NIL donors and lots of them.

t

texas tech has crazy NIL right now.

So does Iowa State, at least for basketball. Dennis Albaugh pretty much gives them a blank check.

Unless Warren Buffett suddenly becomes a huge basketball fan, it's going to be hard to complete with the NIL money of other Power 5 basketball programs. Howard Hawks was really our only big basketball donor, and he's dead now.

Creighton reportedly payed Kalkbrenner 1.6 million to return. Probably paid Pop Issacs and Jackson McAmdrew (HS player of year in Minnesota) a lot to come. I have a feeling Kalkbrenner got more $ alone than all of the Nebraska players got combined

I think you are exactly right. I don't think that UNL's total NIL bball pot equaled what Kalkbrenner received. Hopefully that will change in the near future.

You nailed it. Albaugh has stepped up big time the last few years for Iowa State and it's paid in spades. I wish Warren Buffet(or his daughter Susan) were die hard UNL basketball fans.

If Nebraska’s basketball NIL is really that pathetic, maybe a different collective is needed?

I dunno the answer, but if we are going on the cheap for men’s basketball that’s athletic department malpractice. You can’t skimp on the top 2 revenue sports. Football and Men’s basketball should be top priorities for NIL, full stop. Sorry VB fans, I like our girls, but they might be sucking up and inordinate amount of NIL dollars. (in comparison to most schools) Just a thought…

But like I said, I don’t know if we’re spending enough on basketball (Maybe Fred just sucks 🤷‍♂️) But if we’re not… shame.

I think you underestimate the following the volleyball team has. And donors can earmark how the money is spent. If there donors want there to go to volleyball. Nothing the university can do about it.
