Yep a follow up. Something interesting Sean had posted in the Chat thread. He listed the number of punts that B10 teams have returned this year:
Penn State - 14
Michigan - 11
Illinois - 8
Rutgers - 8
Ohio State - 7
Indiana - 6
Purdue - 6
Iowa - 6
Michigan State - 5
Wisconsin - 5
Minnesota - 5
Maryland - 3
Nebraska 3
When you look at these numbers, B10 teams on average are only returning 1.7 punts on average per game less than 2 punt returns per game. Yet we are sitting here (or some are)stating that our punt return game is horrible and we need to fire out ST coach. The reality is that teams on the whole are not returning that many punts. Less than 2 per game as a conference? Yet we are complaining that we are behind the 8 ball when it is not really a huge advantage with how few punts are being returned all over college football.
I went down and averaged out the other major conferences as to how many punt returns their teams average on the whole (except for the ACC as I couldnt find those numbers)
SEC - 105 total returns as a conference which averages out to 2.0 punt returns per game.
Pac 10 - 98 as a conference which averages out to 2.0 punt returns per game as a whole in their conference.
Big 12- 84 as a conference which averrages out to 2.1 punt returns per game on average.
So it seems as if most teams around the country are only returning about 2 punts per game on average.
Yes we are sitting at only 3 in 4 games, but realistically we only returned punts or had the chance to return punts in 2 of those games we played as one the Wyoming kicker was trash and kept hitting them short, and this last game vs NW we were guarding against the fake and were in punt safe the entire night thus no returns.
Just thought I would post for some perspective as it seems most teams in the country are only returning 2 punts per game, it certainly doesnt seem like we are letting a HUGE deal go by us at this point in time, because if we are, then most all the rest of the teams in the country are doing the same thing.
