Fleck talks NU Defense, and why they gave up the run game

I was surprised at how well we played on defense ( I admit that I thought we would give up minimum of 30). Im not sold on our prowess just yet. This weekend will go a long way towards that. If we can hold the buffs to < 28, I'll be feeling like we got a shot to win the game. That will be a big if.

Basically said that we ran a 3-3-5 like Syracuse but our dlineman were 320 instead of 260 like Syracuse so they struggled to move us up front and had to resort to throwing.

Very good sign IMO. I expect MN to be one of the more physical teams we will play.

How does that translate against sCUm though? TCU was able to take away their run game (if there even is one) and they still put up like 500 plus yards passing. I’ll feel better if we have a lock down pass D. At least for this game.

I would imagine that we are going to pressure the young sanders and hope to create some turnovers. If we try to sit in coverage we are Fvcked!

I don’t think we really know how good our pass D is at this point. We’ll know a lot more after Saturday, but I’m not sure we saw enough (or at least I didn’t see enough) against Minne to have real gauge on our pass D.

I already felt pretty good about the D but it sounds like Fleck thought we dominated the line of scrimmage. Wish we had Robinson for the first half Saturday.
They need to get rid of that Fvckup rule being kicked out of the game is one thing, but to set out the entire first half of the next game is one of the more ludicrous rules they have..

Yeah good point. No doubt sCUm’s passing game >>>>>>> than the gophers. From what everyone saw. I trust that our D might be better than TCU’s. What I don’t trust is that our O is anywhere close to TCU’s.

Watching the CU/TCU game, Sanders was getting rid of the ball very quickly...it will be hard to get pressure on him.

He also had receivers running open most of the day, and he had no trouble getting the ball to the right guy. NU is going to have to cover a LOT better than TCU did.

NU's best hope is to play ball-control, minimizing CU possessions, while making the most of their own. They will also have to win the turnover battle. TCU had a couple of brutal turnovers at the CU goal line that took points off the board (sound familiar?).

Both teams are still a bit unknown. If this was a Frost coached team, you could not assume there would be any improvement from week to week. We'll see how Rhule and staff perform in that regard. We also don't know if CU will fall for their own hype and become their own distraction this week. We don't know the true quality of either Minnesota or TCU, either.

Unfortunately, we do know that CU's QB has a fantastic game under his belt. Our guy....not so much.

He did take some pretty big sacks when really pressured. He also looked slippery as a mfer at times with pressure. Ugggggh god I love college football. Can’t effin wait until Saturday.
Like I tell my guys. They are too good to hold scoreless. If we mitigate big plays, respond to set backs, pressure the QB consistently despite a few scrambles, we can keep them to a reasonable offensive output.

He is still a young QB. We have to pressure and change up looks frequently. Then Tackle in open space

I think if you ask most d-coordinators they would say they want to shut down the run first and make the other team 1 dimensional. So how does that translate? By getting them in 3rd and long and hopefully getting them off the field while also gassing their D.

I didn't watch the CU game. Did TCU try and slow the game down at all? I expect us to pull the Minnesota and Iowa trick where we gain 4 yards on the ground each play, run the clock down under 5-10 seconds each time, and really limit their possession time. Give our D lots of rest. We HAVE to score though. Feed Gabe Ervin all day.

No slowing down. It was classic Big 12 football. Lots of throwing. Not much defense.

Plus Minnesota had some guys open that dropped a handful of passes. Specifically their TE.

They also made some really good catches that won't always be made. Hard to tell at this point what we have in our D but they looked solid.

Geez. Settle down. Kid looked good but it was one game.

TCU had 541 yards and averaged 6.8 yds per play. CU had 565 yards and averaged 7.0 yds per play. You call that good defense?

Kid looked GREAT. By most accounts, he’s a heisman candidate, if not the front-runner. But okay.

Bad defense or really good offense? I don’t know. We’ll know more as the year goes. But just like you won’t call that Hunter kid great after just one game, I’m not ready to chalk up any of what I saw on Saturday as bad defense.

I finally got it to work. Thanks!

It was a good article.

He certainly is the Heisman front-runner, because people freak out so much. Now that game will be ingrained. He had the pick that Klatt creamed himself over. Did he dominate on defense? I casually watched the game but didn't realize I was watching the greatest player ever so I didn't pay that much attention.

TCU offense was not great. If we can run the ball effectively we're in good shape. If we're consistently in 3rd and long we're in trouble

I think we got a huge upgrade at DC. OC is probably going to prove out that way too IMO if he can get Sims to take care of the ball.

Colorado does not have a good front seven. Their defensive line is horrid. Their offensive line is way worse than ours in the run game. Strength and conditioning goes to us. If we decide to display physical dominance we will win.

If TCU was such a huge victory, why did TCU drop out of the rankings?

I think ejections should be only a quarter.

You can get ejected in the 2nd half with 14:45 to go in the 3rd or you can get ejected with :02 left in the game and still get the same penalty.

Yeah. I was unsure when I first listened to white talk at a clinic. Really good dude just came off as inexperienced. I think the 30 stack gives us an edge with regards to blitzes, stunts and overall confusion. However We were able to take advantage of MINNI not knowing exactly how we were going to align or what types of pressures and coverages we were going to use. We don't have that against the Puffs.

Offensively I don't know. We continue to do head scratching things. Starting with your starting RB getting minimal carries, ending with your fumble prone rb getting carries in crunch time. In the middle of it is, talented wr's on the bench and your 4 star TE never getting targeted.

Football doesn't have to be difficult. Get the ball to your damn playmakers.

We played a great RB last friday night. We took away a lot of what they do with him in the running game. So they threw the ball to him on swing routes and let him outrun and run us over. We still won but we couldn't stop their best playmaker when they gave him the ball on simplest of plays. Why NU can't do that is beyond me.

Ty should be a handful in the 3rd quarter. Not sure if Rhule said who they will be adding to the rotation for depth?

To make room for sCUm? 🤷‍♂️

Seriously one of the worst points ever made on this board, and that's saying something. 🙄
