This play was referred this morning on Sharp and Benning in the segment with Aaron Semm, always a favorite segment of mine. I see Sam Cotton wide open but the player Semm mentioned who was wide open and puts Huskers in FG range likely is Brandon Reilly. Here's the dialogue:
AS: On that last regulation drive we come out a tight bunch to the boundary. We throw slant swing to the field. We hit Stanley for nine yards on first down. Then we come back, we throw a stop. Ok, now we're moving, we're on schedule. We get in gray (?) flex and we try to throw a stick route to Cotton who has been sneaky good. But let's be honest, he's not Cethan Carter. He's not as dynamic in open space, can't get separation so now we got an incompletion.
So what I'm leading up to now in the next play, 2nd down and 10 from the 49. We repeat the exact same concept that we ran on the first play of the possession.
DB: Aw, yeah, I gotcha.
AS: And all I can say is... he predetermined where he was going with the football. Because if he throws the slant route...
DB: yeah...
AS: ... to Reilly, you can't get a bigger window on a slant route
DB: And he's probably running after the catch quite a bit
AS: He's running after the catch, you're in field goal position.
