Feel sorry for Riley?

Aside from the nice guy crap, this guy is making a fortune for producing sub-par crap on the football field. This is not 1960. He is making what any person on this board would only dream of, including myself. If I produced this garbage at my workplace, I would be terminated immediately. I don't care if he "is a nice guy" or whatever, fire his ass and get it over with. I really don't think he needs the money when he is retired and the co-manager of a Hallmark store or whatever he chooses to do in retirement. Enough is enough. This is 2017. This garbage about not about supporting the program or whatever? That will come in time. Enough is enough. Fire his ass and get on with it. Frost this Frost that. Who cares? Just get a good proven coach and AD in here and eventually it will turn out just fine. If frost is the best man for the job, great. If not, find someone else. The "if they fire Riley" talk is pointless. He needs to be fired, he WILL be fired, and hopefully the idiots in charge will come up with something remotley resembling a proven, quality coach. Will they? I hope so, because this is their last chance for a long while. Do I think they will? No way in hell. Eventually maybe. Now ? Start with the AD. We will be saying who? really? and what? after he if hired. The coach? Same thing. People have to learn the hard way. They have been doing it for years and I do not see that in the next 2 weeks when they hire a new AD, and after the Iowa game when they hire a new coach. it will be any different. I am hopeful they prove me wrong. Will they? i doubt it. If history dictates anything (and it usually does), it shows that we will continue to be talking about this farce 10-15 years from now. It has played out this way for 16 years. Now all of the sudden it will be different? I hope so, but I see the handwriting on the wall. I play the odds, and due to the big boys making the hires, the odds of them choosing a head-scratcher at both posiitons are very high..Those are odds I will take in a hearbeat. as far as Frost? Hire him. It actually might make sense. But if he was not from Stanford and "mostly" Nebraska, few people on this board would be talking about him. We are going to get a new coach at the end of the year ( that is a 95% given, not because Ohio state kicked our asses-it was decided when they fired our AD.) Anyway, this will be do or die. I want to "do",, but my gut is telling me"die". I know, pretty sad , but i have a hunch that history will repeat itself for another 5 years. They have proved me right for 16 years. What is another 4 to 6 years? Their crappy play on the field this year has went accorging to plan. Let's hope the next 4 to 6 years proves everyone wrong. will it? Like i said, I am a betting man and you know how I bet. However this is one bet that I hope to lose. Unfortunatley, I think i will keep winning for a while.

People keep wanting Scott Frost. If Nebraska hires him and he fails to bring Nebraska to its glory days, then what??? What coach would want to coach Nebraska with a gun to their head?... Expectations are pretty high in Lincoln and the pressure to win is enormous as it should be but if you keep firing coaches every 2 -3 years the program will never get better. The truth is Nebraska needs a young, up and coming coach with the hunger to win. Riley was a bad hire. Never bring in a coach at the end of his career..Just a stupid hire IMO!

Riley acknowledges that things haven't gone as planned and will take longer that at his age he is willing to commit. He retires and we agree to pay him his full buyout. I hope we can avoid personal attacks on his character. I fear I may have been guilty of this in the recent past and will do my best to avoid it.

Not sure the above is feasible given how the contracts read, etc

Yes, just a game.....but as you say it stings badly. It's one thing to lose......but massive humiliation is far, far worse.

We can be respectful. I think Coach Riley is giving it his best. Obviously we need a change but I would think we one need an AD two need time to get a new head coach. Getting rid of Riley right now is not a good move for the team. I would wait until we are ready to move on our next Coach.

If Nebraska hires Frost and things don't improve, then it will be time to accept our Minnesota fate. But I do not expect anyone to bring Nebraska back to the "glory days". It's nice to point to the 60-3 record over 5 years (93-97), but that should never be expected to happen again.

I say go for Frost, nothing is guaranteed, but he might be the best at understanding how to make it work at Nebraska, which is different than USC, texas, and SEC.

Riley is a nice guy and is only one year from being able to collect his social security. I say either keep him in some administrative role for 1 year, or maybe Oregon state might take him back in an admin role so he could elect to retire from osu with dignity and collect his social security.

I have a feeling it'll similar to what Osborne gave Callahan. I think there were 4 games left and TO said that if he won out, he wouldn't be fired; 3-1 and they could work with it; 2-2 or less and it wasn't going to work out. Callahan went 1-3 (won vs. KSU (blowout); lost at Texas (4th quarter collapse (Charles 200+ rushing)), at Kansas (blowout), and at Colorado (2nd half collapse)).

If Riley can go 4-1 or better, he's probably safe, 3-2 can be worked with if those two losses are to PSU and Iowa, and 2-3 or worse and he's probably gone. Even at 3-2, if there is someone Moos and the rest of the administration want, Riley is probably gone.

This is just my guess, no inside info.

TO was consulted (as well as the other coaches currently at NU) on bringing in Moos as AD. I like the hire and that other respected coaches input was valued. Frost knows the culture, knows how to relate to the current player, and runs an effective college system. However, FANS will need to be patient his first couple of seasons. We first need to start to be competitive again (we're certainly NOT right now), then we can focus on expecting to win once we're consistently competitive...

While I agree that Purdue is better than Iowa at this time, I don't think the perception from losing to Purdue will allow him to keep his job, while the perception from keeping it close against Iowa wouldn't be as bad (but still likely not good enough to keep his job in all likelihood).

Regardless, either one of those losses are not where we want to be. I think it would be better from a perception standpoint to have a close loss to Iowa than Purdue.

The hardest place to coach? Doubtful. Not sure I would say the expectations are insane. Expectations is not what is going to get Riley fired. What's going to get him fired is his team continuing to explode. I don't care who you are...what was put on the field this last Saturday was embarrassing.

Yes I do feel bad for Riley. He’s a great guy, great heart and overall one of those like able guys. He took the Husker HC job because he wanted a chance to win the big time before he retires and prove he could win the big time with the right school. Then he takes the job without realizing how much of a mess we had going on here and he’s not the type of coach that can rebuild a big time program fast. Now can he rebuild a program, yes I think he could if given enough time but he’s not one of those coaches that can do it in a hurry. Riley swung for the fence and tried his best. For the issues our team had, Riley WAS NOT the right coach for the job.

But yes I feel bad for the man because all he wanted to do was show everyone he could win the big time with the right school. Now had Riley went to a school that didn’t have the mess we did and needed a full blown rebuild, he may of been more successful. A team that had all the right players and the roster was all good to go, just needed the coaching to get them there, he’d probably had been fine.

Again, Riley was NOT the right man for OUR team and job. But he’s a great guy and if any deserves a chance to win it big, he does. He just swung for the fences with the wrong team and wrong mess that he’s not cut out for. No wrong with feeling bad for the man at all. But I agree, at seasons end, it’s time to find us a big name, proven winner for our next head coach.

I'm pretty sure there is a rule somewhere in the NCAA handbook that if you lose to Purdue two out of three years you are automatically fired.

For God's sake. Losing to a Purdue just proves what a good coach can do at a bad program. It undermines the whole Riley charade that he does more with less or whatever the hell people believe.

4-2 without giving up 42 to an unranked team in one half, beating NIU at home, and forcing another team to punt. Insane expectations.
