I read somewhere were the term fans is derived from the word fanatics. That make s sense to me when one observes how a fan's emotional well being is so dependent (at least for the short term) by how successful his team is doing. I've also made my own observation about sports in general. It seems to me that playing sports often brings out the best in people, but being a sports "fan-atic" like most of us are, brings out the worst in them.
