EDGE Cameron Lenhardt starting?

(1) Thanks for posting this.

(2) I didn't think starters had been named. Has that changed?
Not named officially but it's 1 vs 1 in practice and if Bryce is our starting RT praising a true freshman, saying that's who he goes against everyday it seems legit. Thought he'd have to have a year at least to put muscle on but idk.

It's not like he was a marshmallow, he was a highly touted and recruited player.

We need to get past the 'oh he's a freshman that needs time mentality'.

Plenty freshman help other teams, and there is no reason that can't be true here.

Lenhardt looked pretty mature as a high school senior. Him earning a starting job wouldn’t surprise me all that much but there’s a lot of time before that first game.

Benhart vs Lenhardt. Doesn't everyone look good against Benhart? :)

This. For years I've wondered why all of our freshmen redshirt and every other team around the country is playing theirs. Super frustrating that your top 2-5 recruits every year aren't playing meaningful offensive or defensive snaps each year.

For the most part the freshmen we’ve gotten weren’t high 4 or 5 star guys who didn’t need much development. We’ve had to play way more underclassmen O linemen than is prudent.

We’ve played quite a few freshmen RBs and some DBs. Playing in a P5 scheme takes some time.

Are they working 1 vs. 1's?
Yes. The team goes 1s vs. 1s throughout every practice. I feel good predicting Lenhardt will play meaningful snaps, and I feel even more confident that Umanmielen will see meaningful snaps as a true freshman, especially if he adds strength and a bit of size over the summer. (I'm thinking 5 lbs?) ... wrote about that more in-depth a week ago (LINK)

Rhule on Cameron Lenhardt and Princewill Umanmielen from two weeks ago:
"Normally, you notice that they're early enrollees. But Cam Lenhardt and Princewill (Umanmielen) have spent a lot of time on our first string. They are outstanding players."

On the early enrollees as a whole:
“We try to look at everybody as where they are right now, and I think those early enrollees are really gonna help us. And maybe they won’t help us this year. I mean, I hope so, who knows? That’s why I always say I wait until all the way until training camp to kind of make those decisions because some guys are gonna make huge jumps in the summer, and some guys won’t.”

There is no Robinson or Gunnerson this spring I don't believe
Robinson has been out all spring after offseason surgery. Gunnerson got hurt early during spring ball and was out for 2-3 weeks but returned to practice recently. He was in a yellow jersey for the first three open practices but was back to full participation at the fourth open practice on April 11.

At his presser last Saturday, Rhule said Gunnerson has been back and looking sharp:

“He’s a player I’m really excited about. I like what he does.”

Our talent level has been below par. Therefore I'd argue that 3-4 star kids should be pushing for PT against some of our starters the last few years. Yes, P5 scheme takes time, but you should be able to get kids comfortable with some of the scheme to utilize them (for example our WR's, DE, LB). If we have a freak at WR that can only run half of the route tree, on 3rd and 8 isn't he better than Leiwer or Belt? On third and long we keep trotting the same turds out there to pass rush. Put in the young guy that can fly and turn his ass loose on the QB. That's more of what I'm saying. As they get their feet wet, you build on that. Instead in the past we've seemed to redshirt them, not develop them, and then be pissed when our highly touted recruit hits the portal. I do agree we have probably tended to play more young RB's and DB's. Probably positions where you can play without thinking so much.

The past few years we have played a ton of freshman under Frost, because he couldn’t get players to stick around. Martinez, Mo Washington, Betts, Benhart, Corcoran, Hausman, AJ Allen, Nick Henrich, Hartzog. I’m sure I’m missing more. I don’t mind playing freshman as long as they’re better than what we got and we actually get them to play a couple more years here and grow with the team.

Ty is out, Blaise is back practicing. The young kid getting starters reps is great for building depth. We've also heard about progress from Tagaloa, Rollins and Umanmielen on the DL, but not much about Buckley. I figure they'd like at least 6 guys ready to play in a rotation. Wynn, Robinson, Hutmacher, Gunnerson and Jeudy look to be on that list.

I've been on Benhart's ass since he worked his way into the starting lineup 3 years ago. No doubt, he has been a glaring weakness among a collective OL with other weaknesses.

I'm willing to give Bryce a chance to show what, if anything, he can really do now that he has had a solid winter and spring of higher quality S & C as well as nutrition. Maybe he improves X % in the agility/quickness area.

He's perhaps been beat down mentally in the past and I "think" between Rhule and Raiola they've tried to inject a level of confidence in him.

Very few Husker fans would disagree that RT has been a real hindrance to the advancement of the OL for the last several years. I'm hoping this will be the year that Benhart becomes less a focus on the OL.

Teddy/Nouilli/Scott/Corcoran/Benhart has the potential to be a decent OL if they all get healthy and are blocking for plays that are designed to work to their collective talents.

I was sorry to see Brody Belt enter the portal for his senior season. He seems the kind of guy the Rhule regime might have helped get some playing time, but for all I know, they advised him to move on or maybe he was a "Frost guy" and didn't like this staff. I can't find any reference to where he ended up after entering the portal.

Thank you for doing your part to try and nudge this fanbase past a 1960 mindset!

I think he was just ready for a change. He’s been at NU for a long time

To me it boils down to are freshman and walk-on's playing because they are legitimately good. Or are they playing because of recruiting and roster gaps. Someone like Hartzog I would say because he's good. The olineman who play early? Not so much.
