Dowdell to the portal

If you’re talking about the Ohio State game, Rhule said they called that play thinking that the ball was going to be spotted at the one yard line, but the refs placed it farther back. I don’t know why they didn’t change the play when they saw where the ball was actually spotted. If we had scored there, the outcome of the game might have been different.
That’s on DR.

I thought he ran a lot better once Holgorsen took over. I'm not happy to see him go. In the past you'd plan on a guy like this coming back and taking his game to another level. I'm in the minority because I don't blame anyone for this environment, but it kinda sucks.

Tim Beck said it best, you're not building a program, you're just trying to build a team each season. P4 teams have it better than a school like Coastal, but a lot of it still applies.
Interesting comment about having to learn new offensive & defensive schemes at each new school.

I imagine a number of schools will try to adapt to this by dumbing down their playbooks and running the same base offense & defense as others, so incoming players could contribute immediately. The sameness of such a transition would be really boring for the fans.

Why do people seem so concerned if DD leaves? He was hammered during season from some of the same people so concerned he may be transferring again. Everyone wanted EJ to get the bulk of the carries rightfully so. Both hit the portal and one committed back N. This is the way CFB is. DD transferred once already. Selfishly speaking we have the one back I would prefer.

What game did that happen?

It didn’t. He’s talking about OSU when the ball should have been at the half yard line and was spotted at the two. And it is on the back to decide how to get in the end zone. Whether to go over the top, power through, bounce it, etc.

Maybe they would have called something else in that situation if they knew the ball was on the two, but it’s like like running power there is a bad call, or at least one you can’t score on.

College football is a complete joke right now. Best not get attached to any players nowadays until this stuff is stabilized.
It is truly NFL lite right now and I can’t stand the NFL.

If it does go full blown $hit show at least I was alive to see CFB in its heyday. Some great memories and games before all the mercenary stuff.

This is worse than the NFL. At least there are multi year contracts in the NFL. Right now players can up and transfer anytime they want. It is a $hit product right now

Paced the team in carries

Been hard for us to find RBs

This thread is funny
He's a good short yardage running back. It would be nice to have him, but at some point we have to find a complete back again. EJ is close, but lacks a few things. Maybe Parker? I still think we should pound the portal and possibly go after that Maryland kid.

It is more that this is what CFB should have looked like for years. Think how many ****ing college players were just stuck at a school with no chance to play with almost no chance to leave. All because when they were 17/18 they picked a certain school. That is crazy when you really think about it.
They all could have left and sat our for a year.. Nobody was stuck unless they only had one year of eligibility left and even then they could have sat out of school for a year. IF they had taken care of their academic business there should have been no reason to not graduate in 3 years. Virtually all of them spent summers at their school and could have been takig summer session classes. What's going on is insane but if you talk to people in the corporate world the same stuff is going on in business. Some people hop back and forth between firms like you supposedly do between women.

It's silly for anybody to be glad he's in the portal. Hopefully he comes back because you don't want to start the season with the guys we have IMO and I doubt we can replace him in the portal with somebody better. Him leaving falls under "be careful what you wish for".

I agree. I don't understand though when the players sign their NIL contracts why the schools haven't put in clauses to prevent the churn. For example you could easily add a bonus payment that can only be collected IF the player is on the team for X seasons.

I'm not glad he is in the portal, I was actually hoping maybe Barthel would be sacked and we could get a RB coach that could teach these dudes vision. With that said, my point stands. We need a complete RB and we haven't had that for a long time. Need the combo of speed, power and ability to catch the football. Dowdell is a great asset for short yardage, but kills us with his inability to find the hole or make one person miss.

You were pretty much stuck, which is why transfers hardly ever happend.

Freedom of movement is one of the greatest equalizers for people.

It is why the divorce rate has shot up so much, women now have freedom of movement where before they were pretty much stuck to the jabronie that they married at 21 years old. No job, no education, not chances.

Let me tell you a story, even though you did not ask and don't care, but I am bored!

Years ago, I got offered a new teaching gig. It was over the summer, late June maybe. The school I was teaching at refused to "let me out" of my contract, which in education is almost unheard of, but their reasoning was it would be very hard to replace me (it would not have been, trust me) so my choices were

1. Go to the school board and ask them to release me. Guess what, the next school board meeting was not until the first week of school. So that was not an option.

2. "Quit" and have them pull my teaching certificate which would make it so I could not teach for at least 1 year in Nebraska and/or the surrounding states (just like the old stupid transfer rule, where they had to sit out a year a for no reason)

So, I packed up my stuff and moved back to a town/school that was 200 miles away from where I was currently living, turned down a new job at a better school with better pay, and did my time. All because I had to "sit out" a year.

Now, had that school that made me come back had some budget issues the would have been happy to "RIF" me and/or other teachers that had a contract with them, but when it wasn't in their favor, they were happy to make me come back.

Anyway, I get that the new transfer rule is annoying to fans but it is not annoying to the players, the ones that are actually involved with it all. So I really just try to look at it form their point of view instead of my fan point of view. If that makes sense.

Or challenge the spot. Don't remember if we had one or not but it was a terrible spot

What field do you teach? You've probably already told us

We desperately need upgrades in talent. Every one of these guys leaving who was an ok player on a losing team, and would likely hardly sniff the field on any top 25 team is an opportunity to upgrade talent. EJ would find the field for most teams. DD would not. Why spend more on a very average back when you can use those funds to upgrade? Sure, there is a chance you don't get someone better. However, standing pat means more losing. I do not understand the people on here who clammer for bringing back "experience", when the experience on this team, outside of a few players, means more .500 football. If you are not moving forward, you are falling behind.

Well, for years...leaving meant sitting out a year or dropping down a level to play right away.

There also was a bit of an "agreement" to not transfer in-conference.

Most players redshirted, so that year was gone. Then your redshirt freshmen year you go through the season and hardly play, maybe you realize you hate it there. So you start to look to transfer (which was not like today, in terms of the ease of contacting other teams), so after that redshirt freshman year, you transfer only to be forced to sit out a year.

Now since your senior year of HS football...you have not played for 3 seasons.

That is a pretty tough choice to make.
And the rules worked exactly as intended. At the time, they were student-athletes. The student part is the first part of that. I have no idea how these transfers are able to transfer all of their credits over to a new school every year and maintain good academic standing. Likely requires a stupid amount of work on the back end to enable all of that.

If you transfer after your freshmen year you are not going to lose many credits at all, those are all gen eds.

I did a transfer after 3 years and lost 3 credits I think, for a speech class.

Well, I am a dude that coaches, so it narrows it down to PE or Social Studies. Hahaha!

Ahhh, the dream combo!

Even while "teaching" a real class, those PE teachers still wear PE attire! They have it made!!!
Both my football/track coaches were PE teachers in addition to....you guessed it. Social Studies. Oddly enough my computer science teacher was my basketball coach. Certainly an outlier.

Yeah I assumed that!!! The reason I ask is, as a former board member, did have a cut off date. Usually it was a non-issue and was at the discretion of the supt. if he felt there were suitable replacement. In theory it would be reserved for the "hard to find " types like science/math or possibly English but pe or social studies were pretty easy replacement. Yeah June is a little late ( later than the date in our contract) because the best college grads are gone and the game of musical chairs has pretty much ended.

We did have that happen with shop teacher that really put us in a bind. Let him go but options were a bust.

It’s on Rhule

Call a goddamn timeout in that situation

So stupid
DR is QB1 at a P4 school. It’s his job to take in the landscape in his pre-snap read. He has the ability and the right to change the play or call a timeout. DR could have easily pulled the ball and ran a naked bootleg around the outside. DR has the best viewpoint to determine if that play call will work. Not everything is the coach’s fault.

I coached against a FB coach, he was really good too and he was a K-12 art teacher! Dude was a total hardass too! I always wondered what he was like in the classroom with those little kids!

Don't get me started on non-educators being on a school board, that is just insane to me but to your point, finding a social studies teacher is about as easy as finding water in the ocean.

Foreign language, science, math, forget about it.

Every team not named Boise St needs a short yardage back. We had a pretty good one that I would prefer stay around.

your answer is "ignore the coach's play call and go rogue"?

LMAO. perfect.

Question: Have the transfer rules changed? I thought a player could transfer once of their own free will, then they could transfer if there is a coaching change and then finally a grad transfer.
