Do we still take Daniel Carson? Did Rogers take his spot?

Another site had many crystal ball predictions for Carson to Nebraska just this past week. Now today after Casey Rogers' committment there are many crystal ball predictions of Carson to Texas. I always though of Carson as someone we would take no matter what but it kind of seems that Carson was the odd man out now that we have both Wilderman and Rogers as committed DE's. Anybody have any thoughts/input on this? Do you still think we would take Carson?

Carson to NU_ NOT going to happen
That's why NU made a beeline and new offers to DE prospects the day after the Carson visit to NU

Wilderman is the real deal, Rogers shows lots of potential- great cultural fit
Something went sideways with Carson- IMO he's off the board by NU;s choice

Sometimes kids blow it- reveal things about themselves on a live visit that the staff cant live with
Other times schools have to close hard and see where they are- give a now or never offer- it happens AND it's necessary. Otherwise you end up undersigning and creating HUGE holes in your roster because you failed to ask hard questions and are just blindly hoping. No one knows what the deal is- I trust Frost and his staff

I think a bird in hand is worth two in the Bush. Both players are good athletes however Carson seemed to be slow playing it. With only a few weeks left in recruiting this frees up the staff to concentrate on closing out the class. The Huskers have been left hanging dry on signing day by top players way too much the last few years. Good move IMO.

I love how we have to assign blame or choice as to who decided against Carson to Nebraska.

Who cares who chose to end the relationship? He isn't going to Lincoln regardless.

But if you wanted to look at this objectively, Carson has never really shown the outward interest in Nebraska. If I were a betting man, I would bet that the staff asked him what his intentions were and either he continued to slow play and said he said he really didn't know or he said other schools were ahead of Nebraska, so they moved on and now apparently so has he.

Not sure that Carson was ever that excited about Nebraska....I think his family wanted him closer to home, but I think he wanted to go somewhere else. Whatever the reason, it appears we have moved on.

We are now interested in the Baldanado kid out of Florida...interesting prospect. This was his first year playing football in the U.S., and he had 30.5 sacks. Not sure the level of competition he faced, but that is impressive at any level.

Your comments have an Occam's Razor feel. The great thing is that Frost and Co are identifying a variety of kids they like and are moving to close the class as soon as they can. It seems we've waited and lost at the last minute on some psns of need over the years. At some point you're either on the bus or you're off.
Good to see you on the board.

That is Bobby Bushay level right there!

I guess. I just think it is funny that we have to make sure everyone knows that it was Nebraska's choice to move on. Like it matters.

But again if you look at it objectively the kid simply never showed a huge amount of interest in Nebraska. Perhaps Nebraska simply chose to move on, because the kid had no interest. That is like me saying I have decided to move on from a woman and deciding not marry her, when she never really had any interest in marrying me to begin with. Who really made the decision????

Umm, she is a slut. You never wanted her in the first place. Figure it out Taco!

Very low level of competition- mostly against small private schools. Only 26 kids on the roster- BUT it is Florida nonetheless

Had a buddy coach at that level in Florida (Lake Mary Prep) and only had 18 kids on the roster- but 1 of them went DI (Ray Lewis- son), and another went FBC. He had a BUNCH of tiny linemen playing for him (started an 8th grader) and 2 foreign exchange students who were awful. So dont get really stoked about the numbers.

A project for sure- but NU has 2 strong DEs in the fold already
Maybe a reach makes sense here- where they are position group and time wise
Trust the coaching staff

I guess they way I look at it is that in past years we were like the dumb guy waiting by the phone while the woman was planning her wedding to another guy.
If you are waiting on a kid to choose at a hat pick ceremony at his school on signing day and you don't know if he is picking your hat, you've likely been played.

I really hope if NU gets a solid 20-21 along with Breon and Vedral that they don't get reachy with a couple of spots. Given that at one point in the fall we were looking at a class of 18, the class assembled is now a bit larger but really has good roster turnover potential for its size. No need to step on things with possible dead weight.

Well we'd take him but the rumor is he didn't like his visit to Lincoln so won't be coming. Wants to go someplace where they have more parties like in Austin. Laughing

I figured as much, but there have been a ton of programs visiting Baldonado this week - UCLA, Michigan State, Oregon, Illinois, and Pitt were all in to see him just in the last 2 days. It seems like he might be set to blow up like Taiyon Palmer did after we offered him.

Baldanado has visits scheduled for MSU and Oregon- but doesnt show offers made by either. NU has last chance at him. His film- really hard to judge, level of competition pretty weak. He has what you want for measureables though. Redshirt guy if he is N

You sidestepped all around the landmines here so just come out and say it. The coaching staff is working their butts off to find the best available talent that remains. Those schools that are still in the hunt have the field drastically narrowed. There is no waiting now as the pond just shrunk and while there are a few big fish left, you have to be honest and say the quality isn't there overall and some of these same kids may or may not have been a consideration in a normal year. That is not to take anything away from the coaching staff but it would seem logical they are in the "taking the best available" mode instead of the best overall. JMHO

I guess in some ways, this is the good of the early signing period, you know where recruits stand and you aren't wasting any time on those who haven't made up their minds or have and haven't said.

I don't mind the hat deal although I would never encourage a kid to do it. I suspect in most cases the winning school knows in advance but maybe not. The families all seem to know so I am guessing they have called he coach of the winning team.

This is a transition class and the staff is scrambling to find the proper mix of quality and quantity. You try to find a few difference makers - AMart, etc and then try to limit the damage that is inherit with this process.

The true evaluation of this staffs recruiting starts after 2018 signing day.

I for one tire of seeing NUs hat in the ring of one of those hat picking things
Seems like NU is always finishing second in those chases

Im only SPECULATING- but this late in the cycle with a team that has some serious needs with a player that Nebraska has been recruiting for over a year- you have to ask the hard questions. If you've met all of the prospects needs and answered all of his objections- you have to tell some of those kids; hey we need a yeah or ney by the end of your trip and you cancel the rest of your visits- otherwise we need to move on.

Of course you cant do that with every kid, but at some positions, late in the cycle and with someone that has been around NU for over a year- maybe so. Doesn't mean anyone is at "fault", just what needs to be done in certain cases. Just a guess.

The main problem I have with kids that are reaches is that they tie up scholarships for 4 or 5 years. This isn't like awarding the walk on a scholarship for his senior year. The past 15 years Nebraska has had too many kids that don't ever see the field, or rarely see the field and use a scholarship for 4 or 5 years. Until Frost shows that he is going go against what Nebraska has typically done, and cycle kids out, I would almost rather have 75 kids on scholarship and have the ability to use the 10 unused the next cycle. Especially in a transition year.

There is talk that they are now going to allow athletes to transfer and not have to sit out a year. That is going to totally change recruiting. P5 schools will essentially be able to pluck the best players from Non-P5 schools, so they won't have to take many "reaches" knowing they can just go out and get "free agents" every year. And those that don't get much playing time won't hesitate to transfer schools since they won't have to sit out. It's going to cause chaos.

It this does pass, I think there should be some sort of limit on how many "immediate transfers" a team can add each year.

The pressure to engage in roster culling will increase. Rich get richer, the others get poached.

Does anyone know if these things have to be voted upon by the ncaa membership, or are these just arbitrary decisions by the ncaa board of directors or whatever their governing body is?

Carson has committed to Texas. Seems like kind of a strange dude. I think I'm happy with Wildeman and Rogers.

Yeah, that tweet is . . . . . . interesting.

Yah. What the heck does this mean?
"On this day, 18 years ago Daniel Alexander Lamonte Carson was born, Today I will defy these odds"

Its missing some words apparently. The third person deal aside, his pinned tweet is about the "beautiful struggle" of making it out and not having much. Somehow he thought the odds were against him

On this day, 18 minutes ago, Daniel Alexander Lamonte Carson made me as queasy as I've felt since that fateful day that I chose to eat at China King restaurant. Today I will defy these odds and embark on a new journey to Wal-Mart to purchase the strongest dose of antacid that is available over the counter, that will hopefully affect the rest of my weekend. So today I would like to announce that I am committing to swearing off drama-queen 18-year old kids that have multiple middle names that speak in the 3rd person. Jimmy can't stand drama-queen high school kids, so Jimmy is happy that Daniel Alexander Lamonte Carson is going south instead of north.
