Welcome to a nuggety Monday, which starts with a compliment for Nebraska football fans. You won your ninth game of the season Saturday against Maryland. And nobody cared!
That's the way it's supposed to be in college football today.
I know nine wins was a big benchmark around here for generations — NU won nine or more for 33 consecutive seasons, an NCAA record. But when teams started playing 12 regular-season games, that mark lost its prestige.
I don't want to go into the Pelini stuff again, but every time Bo's defenders made a case for the status quo, they rallied around the nine-win mark. It was almost comical. So kudos to you, Husker fan. You basically ignored the ninth win of the season. That's progress.
A footnote to the discussion: I don’t know if this stat will make you feel better about Nebraska’s 2016 season or worse about its head coach, but I’m simply the messenger so here goes: This is first time Mike Riley has ever been 9-2 through 11 games of a season.
Whoa.
Riley had some very good teams at Oregon State, but those teams usually started slow and finished strong. 9-2 doesn’t prove that Riley is the guy, but I do think it eliminates some fears about his ability to motivate his teams on a week-to-week basis, to win the games he’s supposed to win.
