Dirk Article

I'm really not sure what there is to have an opinion on here.

I wish Bo would have spoke with Dirk but understand why he wouldn't.

I think Bo is where he needs to be. He couldn't handle the duties of a college coach at a place like Nebraska. YSU won't require as much from him. All he needs to do is recruit Ohio and coach.

Pelini took the job at Youngstown State because he was not going to get a job at any big time college program. I don't care that it is his hometown. If he was so nostalgic to return home he could have taken his millions and moved there at any time. He went there because he was fired by Nebraska and could not get a job elsewhere. End of story. So I would say that, yes, it is a case of how the mighty have fallen. And if he is successful there he might get a D-1 offer in a few years. And my prediction is he would take it in a nanosecond.

This. He wasn't up to the job and is at a place much more aligned with his skill set.

Look, the article basically says that people raised in that part of the country are just that way. Good. People raised in Nebraska are not that way, and those things matter to (most of) us.

Of course, winning can make many people look the other way, but he wasn't able to bridge that gap. I'm glad people are happy in Youngstown. I believe his style of coaching may be successful there, assuming he's learned a few things along the way.

Honestly, I won't be cheering for or against Youngstown State. I likely will not even know what their record is unless they make the playoffs and the local media decides to cover it.

I think Dirk is giving Bo one last fu article myself. He shows up unannounced at a practice a LONG way away from Lincoln, and asks his old friend Bo for some time? I don't think so. Further, the bit about their media relations guy not getting back to him was unnecessary if his article was about "Bo the savior". I think Dirk spoke to them, the Bo told them what his schtick was and they shut him down. Also, you don't paint the mayor of a town as a guy who is pleading for help if you are trying to paint a positive picture of the town.

IMO, Dirk was being a punk.

It was an interesting article but Dirk had no business being at the YSU practice, it's not his territory or any of his business now that Bo is gone. Did he really think Bo was going to give him a interview unannounced? LOL. Wish I could have heard what Bo said to Carl after he declined his interview. Time to move on from Bo!!!

That's just Dirk being Dirk. Of course he knew he wasn't going to get an interview. He wanted to get a rise out of Bo. He didn't get anything substantial but enough to give Bo one more slam. He has to be the most predictable sports writer around.

One more kick at that really dead horse I guess...

Kind of asking for it to travel to Ohio and do this when their past relationship wasn't very good. If it were a board and this happened, it'd be called TROLLING.

GBR

Sorry guys, didn't want this to turn into a Bo thread! I was more interested in what this article says about Dirk.
So what say you: Bo in the "right place and right time," or "how the mighty have fallen?" This is all about Bo. Nothing about Dirk.

I should have clarified: is Dirk's intent to write a...

I can see where this got off my point. Go easy on me, I'm new at this posting thing! :D
Well Dirk really should have formally requested an interview. Would have never been approved. I am sure that is why he showed up. I'll give you this, Dirk has balls. Either one of the Pelini's could have kicked his butt. And it isn't too far fetched to see something like that happen.

My thought when I saw Dirk tweet the link was "I can't believe Pelini agreed to that interview." Can't blame Bo for declining. I didn't read the article, but given their history I can't believe DC flew out there with good intentions.

He went there for the Hall of Fame inductions. Pelini was a side note to the trip.

Exactly what I took from it. The gentleman who said Bo got a raw deal was saying that that's how they were raised in Youngstown; you screamed and yelled expletives, and that's how it was. I found that interesting, and it made sense. Although, you can still be a screamer and be a coach without going over the line, which Bo certainly did. More importantly, though, his us vs. the world mentality needed to go. That all being said, and even though I'm guilty of reading the story and had enough interest to do so, but really, why go there? Just move on.

Dirk is a good writer and was already in Ohio for the Hall of Fame stuff. Probably should have gone through official channels to get the turn down. Wish Bo well but cant say I will remotely follow Youngstown unless they have a deep playoff run.

The last part of your post was exactly what I was getting at regarding this whole article. Just move on, he doesn't need to write that or stop by even if he is close by. IMO, Dirk looks bad here.

Got as far as "At his core, Pelini is a high school coach like Bucci and Bob Stoops’ dad, Ron. Just give him a whistle and let him teach." and stopped.

Reason 412 he shouldn't have been at Nebraska then nor Youngstown now! High school coaches at their core shouldn't be coaching/teaching at DI, DII, NAIA or DIII.

And I am kicking myself for even reading this crap during game week. Let Bo die and lets move on!!!!!!!

I guess Art Briles and Gus Malzahn have no business in the college game, since they were high school coaching legends.

Briles and Malzahn parlayed those high school gigs into big time Div 1 heading coaching positions

Pelini parlayed a big time Div 1 head coaching job into a crap job in Youngstown, Ohio ... next step high school

Pelini is going in reverse

Anyone want to contribute to a fund to pay Dirks way to Blo's first postgame pressor

I came across this article today and wanted to your opinions on it. I have an opinion, but don't want to influence how you read the article. So what say you: Bo in the "right place and right time," or "how the mighty have fallen?"

Have no issue with Dirk poking the lion with a stick. Pelini deserves anything Dirk throws at him for what he did to this program. Dirk is far above petty personal attacks. He happened to be close and stopped by for a visit. Pelini could have been a BIGGER man and granted him an interview. Doesn't mean he has to give Dirk a hug but I am sure Riley wouldn't hold a grudge like Bo.

Guys, I'm sorry it wasn't clearer in the OP. What I was curious about was whether Dirk was being a tool or if I'm reading way too much into the article.

I'm sick of Bo threads, and am a little embarrassed about accidentally starting one myself...

Dirk called ahead, which is why the SID had his number. Bo was probably not informed. Then Bo cried about it and the SID tried to cover his ass

Bo was placed at YSU by someone with heavy ties to Bo and Youngstown with the intent to "rehab" his image.

absolutely no correlation between their past and what was written about Bo. Briles and Malzahn may have started as high school coaches (plenty have I'm sure) but if you read the article it compares him to two long time high school coaches and refer to it as his core job....as if to say that is where he belongs.

I agree with Dirk's feelings that Bo needed to go. I also read his articles during the past few years and enjoyed them far more than Sipple or Shatel's dribble.
But Dirk looks like a tool here with this article. Seriously, let it go. It comes off as someone who enjoyed the whole Bo saga and is sad that Bo isn't still there to beat up on to make himself feel better.
And Dirk does not "have balls". Going to a practice to embarrass somebody to get a rise out of them in a controlled environment where you are assured of not getting the crap kicked out of you is not 'having balls". If you ask me, he's a coward.

I don't feel this was a nasty article. Dirk may have been jabbing Bo a bit about the interview (non-interview) events, but he said some good thing about him too like implying he was loyal to his hometown and quoting people who like Bo. I found the article a bit depressing for calling attention to how hopeless a lot of rust belt towns have become. I was in a town in Indiana once (don't remember the name) that was rundown, half deserted, and the people there were mostly on meth. I asked about it when I got to the business I was visiting in Bloomington. The guy said GM made one part there, like drive shafts. When the factory closed people lost their livelihoods - sad.

True story: A buddy and I ran into Dirk and a buddy of his at the spring game. We introduced ourselves and told Dirk we thought it would be great for the OWH to have him cover all the YSU games this year. We all got a pretty good laugh out of that, and Dirk commented the closest YSU would get to Nebraska this season was South Dakota, so maybe he should try to get to that one. Even as we walked away, we could hear Dirk's buddy telling him what a great idea that would be.

I think I could make a phone call and make that happen......:D
