Developmental program

The vision that was sold here two years ago was that we would be a developmental program.

That some schools were going to take shortcuts in order to become relevant, but we were going to do this methodically and developmentally.

Thus, it would be 3-4 years before this vision took hold, as players were brought in, coached up, and fit into the culture and system. And we need to be patient.

In the last several weeks, our OC has basically been shown the bricks. DH will probably be taking over and bringing in players to complement his offense. Assuming he takes over, MANY of next season's offensive contributors are not on the roster currently.

Our best two coaches on the staff just left for a lateral position elsewhere (were not poached for a promotion) -- both from the defensive side of the ball.

The enema of players flushing out on the defensive side of the ball due to those departures will begin shortly. It will likely be brutal.

So, who the hell are we "developing"? Players that will contribute elsewhere but never here?

Is it possible in this age of college football, with easy and unlimited mobility of players and assistants alike, to be a relevant program -- and a developmental program -- at the same time?

If not, what value does Rhule bring to the table?

I don’t think it was clear two years ago that being a “developmental program” was always a bad idea. Certainly, Deion was widely criticized for shipping out dozens of “developmental” players in favor of short term rentals. CU was not the model two years ago.

But don’t worry, Rhule certainly knows the old ways of doing business are dead and our immediate future rests on buying the best players in high school and the portal — and paying enough to keep our best players. What remains to be seen is how the pool of money under the new NIL rules will be allocated. Clearly, we can’t have 105 millionaires so some development projects will be part of the equation.

We just lost a very good dlineman to the portal but it could well be because he has better monetary offers elsewhere. Our challenge is to do the same thing to some other college to replace him. Like it or not, college sports are now just the AA/AAA of pro football and basketball — and that means players can get rich if they produce. But if not, most of them will be sent packing starting in the next month.

At least it sounds like the new rules with schools controlling the payments will even out the pots of money and that should be good for us. Obviously the B1G has several schools with more ability to raise money to buy players than NU. We have generous donors but the UNL enrollment approximates only Northwestern with most of the schools double our size. I think we are probably 17th in B1G enrollment and that translates to a lot less alumni to tap for money.

We still have a lot of good young talent and another solid 25' class so far. It's not all doom and gloom.

Maybe the development mindset was holding us back. Too big a roster to manage and too many players that only experienced losing and forgot how to win. NIL an portal look like the future with smaller rosters.

It was all bullshit, all optics with no substance behind it. Every program tries to be a developmental program, there's nothing real special about that, besides that our attempts were built on hopes and wishes rather than any real foundation. I've advocated for a long time, Husker fans need to stop paying attention to lip service and recognize the program for what it is. I've been in show me mode, not tell me, and what's been shown for the last decade-plus is simply gift-wrapped shit, and you can't really dress it up better than that.

You seem bitter.

Things change. Trev sold MR on the developmental vision. At that time, we were allowed to have a bigger roster. NIL Is evolving and the urgency to win now is tremendous.

But, what doesn’t change is his culture where guys come in as freshman and have a vision for how they will fit into this program and succeeded. You’re always gonna lose a few.

I'm in wait and see mode. Like @oldjar07 "show me"

Dude has Nebraska on the very same trajectory as the last two college teams he coached. Hard to fire a guy who exceeded his benchmark in year one and met his benchmark in year 2.

He's right on track according to his record.

The AD needs to determine if that is the track he's comfortable with.

The transfer portal and immediate eligibility has changed that whole narrative.

It shouldn't have. It was already known before Rhule was even hired that college football was moving in this direction. But then again, that would require competent leadership to identify trends. Let alone having the foresight to act on those trends in a beneficial manner.
