When we played them in Pelini's first year, we were not as athletic but some guys like Castille and Ganz stepped up and won that game. Stein and Suh had a big game in the trenches. The trajectories of the programs were similar for a couple of years, but then one team benefited from its location and a serious focus on recruiting. That team's coach also was serious about getting the right staff. The other program said can't.

I saw the parallels between the coaches back then as well. It's a good study to see how things went for each. Might make a good management book to compare and contrast how certain decisions were key in positive results, while others were key in getting kicked to the curb. There were lots of similarities, but completely different outcomes.

You could argue Peilini was in a position to be super successful sooner than Dabo. With guys like Suh, Amukamara and Helu in the program we were quickly very competitive, even cracked the top 5 in 2010. Yet, Bo failed to capitalize on his inherited wealth and eight years later Dabo is winning National Championships and Bo is coaching in the FBS.

Your kidding right? It's pretty clear that the "past" is exactly why to a point, NU is where its at right now, and Clemson is at where its at right now. Recruiting and culture matters. Dabo did both right... Bo on the other hand, did not and is currently coaching YSU, and Riley is currently trying to restock the cupboards with talent.

No I am not.

Not normally in "dwell on Bo's past sins land", but given the occasion and the history, it seemed an interesting comparison. It is apparent that even though Callahan ultimately failed, he and his staff had a better eye for talent than the Pelini operation.

Would love to see where we would be now had Callahan fired Cosgrove and brought in a top DC. The guy could recruit.

Those who do not study history are doomed to repeat it.

I thought the same thing about them last night.

Funny they both coached for national championships this year. Dabo for FBS, Bo for FCS. Seems like maybe they are both exactly where they should be.

Don't forget Dabo inherited a very talented Clemson team with guys like CJ Spiller. I felt Dabo did less with his talent at first, but has obviously made adjustments and figured out how to be successful while at Clemson. Bo didn't. It was his way or the highway and to hell with anyone who told him different. It is an interesting look at leadership examples.

Dabo hired a competent DC and recruited his butt off. Bo did neither.

I would say hiring of the assistants and recruiting practices are the biggest differences.

As for Nebraska, the biggest reason for our 15 year struggle is the fact of our AD's dont know when to fire someone. Fir Frank after the 7-7 season, you have your options for a better coach and you fire Bo after he challenges you to fire him (showing you have no balls) and you probably have a better coach as well.

After the 97 season we were Bama and we decided to toss the keys to the program to the running backs coach ... I wonder if Alabama will do the same when Saban retires

Whomever they hire will be a step down. Dabo just guaranteed himself 10 years at Clemson.

It's about who is available when he leaves.

There already is a management book like that - The Energy Bus. Dabo is aboard the energy bus, Bo was an energy vampire.

Sort of agree. But I go back further to 1998 and I say the slide started then, when the football coach who was retiring announces, without authorization, who is replacement will be. No wonder Byrne left under cover of darkness. He didn't hire this dude who just went 7-7, he sure as hell wasnt going down with that ship.
