D-Line: Alignment off the ball

Last year and previously in the Pelini scheme there were lots of pictures of the D-Line lining up almost a full yard off the ball.
Multiple times on Saturday it looked as if the Miami D-Line was lining up off-sides and definitely were much closer than ours to the line of scrimmage(LOS)

Couple questions for those with football coaching knowledge:
1) Is there anything schematically that this would benefit the defense? (Larger gap prior to contact? - read o-line movement prior to contact?)
2) Does the skill/speed/ of a player determine where you line him up in relation to the LOS?
3) Could this be to eliminate small movements resulting in an encroachment?

And for those of you at practice
1) Do they work on "where" to line up extensively?
2) Is this officiated at practice?

From my perspective, this costs our D-Line a full step and seems that it is a fairly large advantage for the limited times it is called. Like you should continue to push the issue until you get called for it the first time.

Look forward to some discussion hopefully staying away from the coaches suck/players suck rhetoric.
