Currently, we are over the limit by 11 scholarships, how

So, some honest questions for those who truly know.

1. I understand that B1G teams cannot revoke a scholarship. True or false?

2. If true and the coaches tell a kid he likely won't see the field and he OK with that, I assume he stays on scholarship and plays it out?

3. Some can go on medical hardship?

4. I also understand they can't go on academic scholarships while playing football, is it true?

5. I assume NIL has no bearing at all? As in a kid can't give up the education and pay for it with NIL money.

Reminds me of the song, there must be fifty ways to leave your lover.

Really?

Some are using NIL for school payments vs schollie

Every year someone gets super worried about the scholarship limit, and every year it works out. It's almost like there are people paid to handle these things. And LOL at the idea of giving NIL money to someone who's not worthy of one of the 85 scholarships.

My understanding is that you can remove them from an athletic scholarship but the school has to honor a non-athletic full ride for the full 4 years. Just what I read somewhere. Not completely sure that is accurate.

Edit: All of the things I could find on the B1G are from 2014. It appears that the B1G does still require the school honor a 4 year ride but there are various criteria unrelated to performance where it could be revoked.

All of the things I could find make it sound like all of the power 5 schools are subject to a similar NCAA rule.

So, they can tell a kid he no longer has a FB scholarship and won't be on the team but he will get a scholarship for academics to finish their degree? If that is the case, then schools would jettison kids left and right to get either down to the right number or to get in the talent they want.

It is interesting all of the angst and I tried to ask queations because I don't know and not much for answers. I just like to know how things work, not how I 'think" they work.

I’ll try to find where I read that. I think schools in fact have been jettisoning kids for years. It’s just that most of those kids transfer when they get the memo because they want to try to play somewhere.

Edit: it appears power 5 schools are supposed to honor 4 year scholarships as long as the player is in good standing. Soooo in theory if a kid says I’m not leaving a coach could say fine but you’re not going to practice. If the kid stayed in school he should still count against the 85.

I was under the impression that we honored all sports scholarships (fb anyway...). An athlete can get a medical or if "cut" he would then go onto academic. But would that have to be legit? Be pretty bogus if he was then getting full ride but didn't deserve it academically

A new coach can cut 10 players from scholarship and put them on non football scholarship. When those players hear that, they can either enter the portal or they can take the free education.
Thanks Tuco. That is the kind of true information I am looking for.

I didn't know exactly how that works. So, a kid who is a freshman, lets say, has three years of football eligibility, can go off FB scholarship and the University is on the hook for the remainder of their time there?

Correct. As long as he isn’t on the roster and doesn’t practice.

1. Scholarships are for 4 years, so they can revoke them after a guy has been in school four years. 5th and 6th year guys can be told to walk and we have some in this boat.

2. Yep, if in his first 4 years. But who wants to put in that kind of work to never see the field?

3. Yes

4. Yes

5. I think they can walk on and take NIL money. Volleyball tried to get Caffey to do it.

In the past normal attrition after spring has been 9-10 guys. Some could be taken off the roster and go on a non-football scholarship. If they want to continue to play they can explore other options. Some will have graduated and choose to move on. One of Frank’s issues was that he was never aggressive enough with his roster management. It was as if we were under a perpetual NCAA Scholarship penalty
I remember Bo Pelini perpetually being under 85. Sometimes in the 70’s. Walkons received temporary scholarships but it was more as a fallback option rather than an incentive.

Thanks. That’s the NCAA rule but does the B1G allow that? All I could find from the B1G was that athletic scholarships are to be honored for 4 years

Great question

And what’s the punishment if not? I tend to not care if it’s a slap on the wrist, which I assume it is

Look at the scholarship list and hold new recruits and year 1 guys out of the meeting/bring your playbook thought experiment. It’s not necessarily easy to get to 10. But of course the coaches will know who’s on the list at the end of spring ball.

This is always a silly question. Coaches will figure it out before fall camp.
Actually, coaches will soon be coming to this thread, and this board in general for ideas, advice, and coaching tips. It's important for us to name names and help decide who should be on scholarship and who should hit the road.

Rhule will be here soon looking for answers and specifically looking for the experts who start a sentence with "I think..." or "We need to..." those are the most important ones.

Now: "Roster management", directors of player personnel, unlimited free agency, bidding wars for players.
Coming Soon: Team general managers, a players union, benching key players in the final weeks of a season, labor strikes, and 3-loss teams making national championship runs because they "got hot" at the end of the season.

If you wanted NFL lite, it is coming full speed ahead.
Puke.
