I remember when my brother and I went to one of Rileys first practices here. After a few minutes we both looked at each other with the same look. I could see that he was thinking what I was thinking. "This is different". Practice was so relaxed. Picture several years of Bo practices. Coaches yelling and screaming. Heavy rap music. I'll never forget Marvin Sanders just berating Prince A after every rep. Putting it simply, loud and active. Back to that first practice. After the Bo experience it was a breath of fresh air. Calm. Kind of quiet. Less yelling. More smiles. Happiness. Even the music seemed to be softer. Looking back now, our instincts were right. This wasn't a good thing.
The players went from having someone in their ass everywhere they went. They had better be at class and they better be in the front row. Somebody was holding them accountable every step of the way. Enter Riley. He lets them hold themselves accountable. Take Nate Gerry for example of not having someone hold them accountable. Maybe this style works when you have a Peter and Wistrom in the locker room. Maybe we don't have the player leadership needed for this style or maybe this style doesn't work period. I'm guessing the latter.
