CU fires OL coach mid-season

Who would coach the offensive line if Austin was fired mid season? I mean, our genius HC has said multiple times he doesn’t have time for ST during the game because he’s too busy with the offense.

If Frost is still around come December/Jan I’m not even confident he will replace a bad coach in Austin but probably better than putting more on the plate for a HC who is already far in over his head.

Bad, bad idea to fire Austin now. If he needs to be fired it can wait until the end of the season. I predict Colorado’s offensive line will get worse this season instead of better
the effect on CU probably depends on why they fired the guy and whether or not they have somebody else on the staff who can pick up the duties. Lots of staffs have GAs who have coached the O line. There may be an assistant who has coached the O line in the past where they could reshuffle duties. It could work. I don't think it would work at NU just because I don't see anybody on the staff who has ever coached the interior O line before GA or otherwise.

I wouldn't be too quick to cite CU's move as a profile in courage, when they're really just providing cover for a terrible offensive coordinator. But Darin Chiaverini is a darling of the local media and part of the "Buff family," so someone else had to be thrown under the bus.

Even CU cares more about winning.
I understand the frustration, but is this really about caring? Do you really think Frost doesn't care about winning?

Of all the things I think Frost is - arrogant, stubborn, egotistical - I don't think he is lacking in caring. I think he really believes what he is doing is the right thing. So add misguided among all of the other things I listed.

Didn’t Wisconsin do the same thing several years ago and it turned out good for them

Not counting a six game slate last year, CU has had a losing record 14 of the past 15 seasons. Hard to get much worse than that no matter what they do.

And we have had a losing season 6 of the last 7!!

How does that old saying go.....something about glasshouses, rocks and throwing???!

There isn't an elite offensive line coach we would be competing for to my knowledge.

I assume the firing at CU is more to send a message to the AD and boosters that the coach is committed to winning (buying time).

I don't think Frost should fire anyone mid season but at the same time he would be too stubborn to anyways. I am pretty sure any changes at this point would require Trev stepping in.

You guys are funny. Austin should have been fired in year 1. It's way too late to be arguing over firing him now when there's only 4 games left until we get rid of this entire abysmal coaching staff.

Sounds like the give Frost more time crowd.

This guy, Frank Verducci, is already on Nebraska's staff.

Veteran coach Frank Verducci is in his fourth season on the Nebraska staff in 2021. Verducci brings extensive experience and knowledge to his role, having coached for more than three decades, including stints as a Big Ten assistant, an offensive coordinator and an NFL assistant.

Verducci works primarily with the offensive line, a unit that had two underclassmen earn All-Big Ten accolades in 2018 while paving the way for the nation's No. 25 total offense. In 2019, the play of the offensive line helped Nebraska post its most yards and points in a Big Ten Conference game. In 2020, Nebraska ranked second in the Big Ten in rushing offense, averaging better than 200 yards per game on the ground. The Huskers again ranked second in the Big Ten in rushing in 2020, while becoming the only Power Five Conference team to average 200 rushing yards per game each of the last three seasons.

Verducci was the offensive coordinator at UConn in 2015 and 2016, and he previously served as the run game coordinator at Notre Dame in 2009 and Florida in 2011. Verducci has coached the offensive line, running backs, tight ends and wide receivers at the FBS level.

Developing offensive linemen has been the cornerstone of Verducci’s coaching tenure. As a college coach, he has developed first round draft picks at Iowa (Ross Verba 1997 - Green Bay Packers) Notre Dame (Zach Martin 2014 - Dallas Cowboys) and Florida (DJ Humphries 2016 – Arizona Cardinals). Thirty-five of Verducci’s former players have made NFL rosters over the course of his career. Single game, single season, bowl and career rushing records were all broken during Verducci’s tenure at Iowa.

In the NFL, Verducci oversaw the development of rookie offensive linemen Joe Thomas (Cleveland Browns) and Jason Peters (Buffalo Bills), both earning All-Pro accolades during their careers. As the Dallas Cowboys offensive line coach, Verducci tutored NFL Hall of Famer Larry Allen in 2002. Cincinnati Bengals running back Corey Dillon set the NFL single-game rushing record during Verducci’s time with the Bengals and Emmit Smith became the NFL’s all-time leading rusher during Verducci’s time in Dallas.

Wow, I shouldn't be surprised we have a guy as an analyst with that kind of resume while at the same time our offensive line coach has our line acting like human turnstiles.

But here I am, still surprised by this staff.

And just what is to be gained by an in-season firing of an assistant coach? At this late point in the season it's best in my opinion to just wait until the season is over. Unless he committed some terrible crime outside of normal coaching, there's just nothing to be gained.
I’m not arguing for anything. Just pointing out something that just happened and that I thought people here might find interesting and perhaps relevant.

Yes. Probably had a good coach or GA in the wings, as Dingle points out above. I guess Colorado probably does too. Do we? according to Dingle, no.
not unless they could hire somebody midseason. Stai I think is on the AD staff but I don't think he has ever coached the O line anywhere. Dawson coached O line for one season at New Hampshire 20 years ago. That's all of the O line coaching experience our staff has. None of the grad assistants even played in the O line. Austin isn't getting fired before the season is over.

well unless we've got an unemployed O line coach waiting in the wings we had better hope Austin isn't canned before the year is over. Bad O line coaching is still probably better than no O line coaching.

I don’t think we should fire Austin mid-season but to say no other Coach on the staff has any OL experience is not accurate

Who else is it? None of them have coaching the O line on their resume. Beckton has never done it. Maybe one or two of them did it for a high school job.
