Countdown to 105

The no contact flag is interesting in Bretz' case. Usually this means you know where you are going and don't want other coaches to contact you. It is almost like he entered the portal, didn't get the news he wanted to hear, then decided to to withdraw from portal, and then got the deal he wanted and then re-enter the portal.

Safety is a position of concern for me. If you aren't a freshman I'm leery. So many db's and so few stepped up. I'm ready for some new blood.
Me too. Most likely to step up of the frosh from the little that I know would be Sanders, Tarver, Stewart, Jones, younger Buford.

These guys I am concerned may never contribute: Turner, Charles, Taylor, Guthrie, Gradney

Jury is out on Prescott, Benning, Barnes

Gotta take all of those visiting DBs that are in the portal, at least they have shown that they actually get on the field

I think when he re entered he was going to New Mexico with Dan Jackson . Then Dan took the South Dakota state job . Be interesting if he takes the tag off know .

Charles has played a lot this year.

Coaches control everything after you enter the portal.

100%

Coaches do not have to allow the player to “come back” unless the coaches sign off on it.

Once a player enter the portal they are looking/hoping for a home and the grass is not always greener.

A player hitting the portal voluntarily may have just saved the coaching staff from having to cut/release them.

I am not sure all of the players have truly thought this through especially with rosters needing to hit 105 at the start of next season.

I wish the players the best because I would not want to be in their shoes right now.

IF he has an offer from SDSU, he might be smart to take it for several reasons. He would have a good chance to play a lot and they’ve put a lot of guys in the NFL lately. It’s a reasonably good school in a nice town.

He might be looking for a school closer to ski slopes with more moderate winters. Who knows? Maybe New Mexico looked attractive for that reason.

Kids his age do things for a variety of reasons. SDSU has a very good strength and conditioning situation as well. They took a 6-5 215 lb walk on TE who was in our scout troop and turned him in to a 315 lb multi-year O line starter. I didn’t think he would ever play.

I easily see 27-30 non contributors, so we will make the 105 easily. The competition should be fierce this spring.

Yep and might leave room for a couple spring portals.
A big DT (about 315) , RB, and OT would put the cherry on top after spring.
I figure after spring, the staff will know which of the RS frosh were whiffs and can move on. We had better load up, too, I think CFB will indeed implement the one window rule after next year.
So going forward you have to hit the one portal hard, and sign big classes

From my understanding from a buddy that heard that John Butler mentioned their going to concentrate on the top 65 players with NIL money and the other 40 players will be like on a taxi squad situation..
That’s going to make it tough to keep young guys around. 65 isn’t deep enough if you’re going to do any development.

You have pointed out the new approach …big ten and sec teams won’t be developing much talent. They will pick up the best from
The other conferences.
Hopefully there’s a heavy contingent of loyal area kids being developed on that “taxi squad”. I think it’s a bad idea to call them a taxi squad. They’re there the whole year. You can’t claim players off of other teams’ taxi squad. Rhule better get ahead of the terminology. Call it the development squad or something similar.

It’s reference so to speak, he is not calling it that but will be used like that.
Rhule, Butler, Dvoracek all come from the NFL.

If a young player applies himself he can work up to the top 65 getting NIL money, the other 40 are still on scholarship.

I understand that but an NFL taxi squad has a much different connotation. You can be there one week and gone the next. We still are going to need young players, especially linemen, in the pipeline getting developed. They normally aren’t going to be in your top 65. It would be interesting to see how programs like OSU and Oregon are going to handle this.

65 seems like too small of a number to give NIL to to me especially when you consider how many linemen we need to develop. I think that is going to make it difficult to recruit high schoolers.

SIAP - But I believe Rhule was pretty clear in that they were going to have the equivalent of 2 53 man rosters. One for game and one for development.
I think Dingle is reading too much into this..
They want to make sure their getting the best 65 for NIL money and the rest will be on scholarship.

My buddy took my place because of a funeral I had to attend to out of state and this is what was said by Bultler from what I gather.

Everyone has to remember there is profit sharing. That will go to the Dylan R. Etc.. Of the team with some NIL . Then the next group will get a chance for a little NIL: It’s not like we are going to have 65 gamers and the rest development players. I agree Dingle is reading to much into the comments.

Won’t see any more movement until after spring now because classes have started: but pretty easy to see another 27-30 is easily doable. If they go with 30 then they have some spring portals coming in .

Agreed. The remaining dudes will likely be engaged in some aggressive expansion.
