CB Killebrew N!! And another WR N soon?

They’re leaving room for 10-15 transfers. Consider though that they haven’t had 150 on the roster and probably have never been worried about “developing” walk ons as contributors. They replace their busts with 4 stars every year.
True. But I did like how the Huskers didn't leave any stone unturned. Walk-ons, summer camp tryout sessions, satellite camps. I bet a lot of that is a thing of the past now.

I was referring to the guys already on our roster having to compete for a spot.
OK. I understand now. But that brings up a potential unfair situation. A walk-on or returning scholarship player out tests, outworks and outperforms a transfer who just got here. You can only keep one. Does the transfer have to compete or is the spot automatic? It's not so far fetched. That scenario has played out many times before. Only now there's limited spots.

Life isn’t fair sometimes but most if not all of the transfers have put it on game video. We’re going to have roughly a 5 deep depth chart. I think the odds are EXTREMELY SMALL THAT one of these transfers WILL BE competing with a walk on who is 5th on the depth chart and clinging to a roster spot.

It’s a game of numbers to bring in as much talent as possible and let competition shake things out.
While there’s concerns, I wouldn’t write off the young guys until they get to year 2 or 3.
Linemen won't get written off that quickly but other positions certainly could. It's a sad state of affairs that we are in when we write off young recruits in year two or three. How does a guy get a chance to actually prove himself? Keep in mind, Donovan Jones got the chance to ball out only because that 5' 7" DB ahead of him got hurt. We've got 30 DBs now. Butler and Rhule both said that the backups didn't get attention from Butler until they were a few games into the season (because Butler came in late and they wanted to be ready for CU).
It’s ideal to not be starting first year players anywhere. Senior Newsome and senior Hill were better DBs than their freshmen versions. The portal just puts more pressure on getting guys to be productive on the field before they leave.
Depth is always a concern, so it helps to find a few young ones ready to play.
I'm not anti portal by any means and I don't really disagree with this. But if a system is in place where transfers come in and get placed ahead of incoming freshmen and 2nd year guys year after year at a school, then few young guys will ever develop. If a freshman is just as talented, I would play a freshman ahead of some other school's Malcolm Hartzog who just transferred in. In this scenario, I would hope that the freshman starts and the "JAG" transfer provides backup depth.

Historically, looking at transfers of all types over the years, we've had a lot of busts. Look like Tarzan, play like Jane. Fall asleep in the film room IF they get to the film room. That's what I'm going by. I'm a Rhule supporter. So naturally, I'd like to trust that all of these transfers are healthy and stay that way, set a high bar with their work ethic and play great, they will be great additions. But my bet would be that there are some misses. There always are. Some guys come in here expecting to be "the man" and their attitude tanks when they realize that isn't happening. Part of it is human nature. I would send those guys packing over a guy who is lesser talented but great to have on the team. NFL franchises make those types of decisions every summer.

Side note- This is a fun discussion. Not trying to argue with anyone here. I like talking philosophically.

Ultimately the portal is almost making teams who want to contend sign guys who are ready to play. Teams like Bama can’t stockpile 4 and 5 star guys like they have in the past. The odds of “developmental” programs competing to get in the playoff have worsened.

For those guys willing to stick it out for 4-5 years for limited snaps, maybe you should re-examine your options. There’s no guarantee of future employment now that the NCAA has decided we should pay players. Sucks for some kids.

But it is more than just scholarships. There is a limit of 105 players on the roster. So if you want to pick up a player late in the summer, you need to have a spot available.
Is there a rule about schools having a "taxi squad"? (if I can use that old term) I think there is a gray area here. So teams could have 10-15 guys as practice players ready to fill in on the 105 to suit up. Or maybe, they cannot practice but they can train outside the program and be ready just in case. This would be a great place for the 2nd team long snapper, 3rd team kicker or that huge walk-on offensive lineman who is two years away. My guess is that these kids would be able to at least get some sort of stipend-- kinda like the male college students who practice with the women's basketball team.

Are you positive? We have 66 walk-ons and are any in the portal? I know some announced on social media they are leaving but 247 doesn't show any definite walk-ons in the portal.

Is it considered “entering the portal” when you go down a division? I honestly don’t know how that works? But I think many walk ons know they won’t get scholarship spot on an FBS team and will drop down to FCS or division II. Some will probably just quit playing football altogether and stay enrolled at the same school. IDK, just spitballing…

The transfer busts still have a better participation record than that 5-6th string walk on. The question for me is are we somehow going to be able to get the Spencer Longs of the world to transfer to NU if they go prove themselves at USD or UNI? We’ll see how it all shakes out BUT those additional 20 a scholarship spots might make it possible to offer more Nebraska kids on the margin who otherwise would have had to walk on or take UNI’s scholarship offer.

Our roster management will be different going forward from this year. We took guys in Rhule’s first two years that we probably wouldn’t going forward. There were a lot of reaches to try to get faster. Those have to be thinned. I choose to look at the scholarship numbers and roster limit and view them as a positive potentially for local kids. We may see more local kids get offers going forward. The whole model is going to get refined.

There is a requirement to fill at least 210 scholarships and spend $6 mil on scholarships over 16 sports. Also 90% of those scholarships have to be funded and not just participants. So teams will have to balance the scholarship numbers along with the Title IV numbers
Where's that requirement? I guess I've never heard that one. I thought there were some that didn't even have 16.

Thanks in advance

I disagree. Neither will play so I will take the guy who plays for free and is a good teammate. Meanwhile the energy vampire who creates a sh*t ton of resentment in the locker room cause his lazy ass is making six figures of NIL... we're better off without them. If a transfer comes in and disappoints greatly, send him on his way first chance you get. Keep the guy who is a better player but came in with less hype. Then we take the rejects six figure NIL and apply it toward the next transfer or toward keeping a current player.

Great point. 105 is still a pretty good sized roster. The recruited walk-on from the past just might get that scholarship offer with the increase in scholarships. Plus, in-state or wherever they come from, good programs are going to want a base of players who stick around and actually buy in to the program. There's got to be a certain percentage of players in the program who don't have to worry about quitting & transferring at a moment's notice.

Whatever happens, don't pay NIL until the season actually starts. And don't pay it all at once, but incrementally over the season with the assumption that the player is in good standing with the team. I think just doing that would solve a lot of issues. And most of the transfers we are bringing in have proven playing ability somewhere. It's unlikely these types are going to be energy vampires upon arriving here.
