Can anyone explain to me what our AD saw in this coach?

What exactly has MR done in his college coaching career that would make an AD at a school like Nebraska think that he'd be a good hire? MR had been a consistently average coach at OSU and it appears that he'll be no more than an average coach here.

I had remained hopeful that this coaching staff would be successful here, but I have no more hope now. This was the all around worst coached NU game I've ever personally witnessed. You might expect to see some of these clock management issues from a first-time HC, but not from one as experienced as Mike Riley.

This one game has shown me all that I need to see. We have an OC who is unwilling (or incapable of seeing) that we needed to run the ball more (it was working). While it did appear that the D played better, they only managed to hold Illinois to about 20 yards less than they averaged in their first 4 games. We had a few drops, but they had more. Things would have looked worse had the Illinois receivers held on to some of those long balls. Then, to top it all off, our coaching staff proved once again that they have difficulty with clock management at the end of a game.

It's time for them to all go. Our team deserves better.

The school needs a chancellor and candidates don't want to hire on to a problem. No phones calls from Delany.

It's just that simple and there were no real aspirations for a future or championships.

Whatever he saw, most of our fan base spent the off season convincing themselves they saw too. I've always thought it was a weird hire. I was open minded but then he brought his old staff too. The argument then became that these guys were suddenly going to change because Nebraska has more resources for the program or something.

Eichorst first call was to Barry Alvarez and asked his opinion on who would be a good hire and that is how he came up with his decision.

Eichorst & Wisconsin have us right where they want us...

Pretty much sums it up for me. My initial thought when I heard about the hire was "WTHeck". I hoped for the best, but I don't see this staff doing great things for our team.

That's as good as NE could get maybe?
nobody knows that. would be different if you were looking for a coach and couldn't get your top choices so you hired riley in this case riley was the number 1 choice and made the hire fast

you can tell by the way he use his walk he's a womans man with no time to talk

I wasn't thrilled when I heard about the Riley hire but thought maybe he would hire a great staff/coordinators. When he brought all of his Oregon State cronies I lost a lot of enthusiasm. It seemed like Callahan/Pelini all over again.

I understand that he is loyal to his guys, but if you look at coaches like Saban, Meyer, Miles, etc., they go out and buy the best assistants and recruiters they can, regardless of whether they have worked together before or not.

Eichorst is incompetent. It was a reactionary hire. Not well reasoned from a football standpoint. Average coach, long in the tooth. Good God! All he and his puppet master wanted was a "nice-guy" public image. Idiots!

Nebraska's AD wants control. He will be gone once Alveraz retires at Wisconsin and he will be the first to apply.

Youy hire a guy with a mediocre record at OSU and suddenly so many are up in arms that he fields a mediocre team. Most B1G fans were shocked that Nebraska settled for that guy.
