I know some people hate the analytics discussion when it pertains to sports. And we all know there is a very good chance at least one double digit seed will be alive after this weekend of basketball.
Kenpom is just one metrics site, but just some information you may find fun or interesting when filling out your brackets.
Since 2002 all but one team has been ranked in the top 22 in both the offensive and defensive metrics for Kenpom and has gone on and won the title. The outlier.. The Shabazz Napier led UConn Huskies in 2014.
Of the Nation Champions since 2002..15 teams had better offensive metrics while only 5 teams had better defensive metrics. The last team to win the National Championship with a better defensive metrics than offense was 2013 Louisville.
Current teams currently in the top 22 with higher offensive metrics vs defensive. UConn, Purdue, Arizona.
Teams in the top 22 but with a higher defensive metrics.. Houston, Auburn, Marquette.
Kenpom does keep updating after every round played in the tournament.. Teams that could go on a run and crack the top 22 in both are Duke, UNC, Creighton, and possibly Tenn (their offense has been falling like a rock).
Seeds 1 thru 5 that have a 50+ difference in the two categories are .. Iowa St., Illinois, Alabama, Baylor, Kentucky, KU, San Diego St. These teams may be primed for an early upset. Though I do think Iowa St & Illinois got good draws.
Interesting seeds based on kenpoms rankings. Auburn would be the 4th number 1seed. UNC would be a 3 seed. Duke would be a 2 seed. Kentucky a 5 seed, and KU a 6 seed.
The biggest seed line differences.. New Mexico would be a 6seed vs the 11 they currently are & South Carolina would be an 11seed vs a 6 seed. Washington St and Mich. St would be next in line.
St. John’s got hosed (though it makes me happy) and Virginia is a huge outlier of the automatic bids awarded.
The best 13 seed is Samford followed closely by Yale. Morehead St is the best 14th seed according to kenpom.
It does come down to match ups, and always hoping for as many upsets as possible.
Husker’s are ranked ahead of Texas A&M.. and their defensive metrics is better than their offensive.
