"Nebraska will continue to use both punters, Dawson said. That Cerni is right-footed and Przystup a lefty is a factor, as is Cerni’s ability to kick rugby style. Coaches feel comfortable in both kicking directionally, though it didn’t happen consistently Saturday."

These types of decisions by the coaches baffle me...

Personally I would have open tryouts and the walk on who could consistently punt it 30 yards and out of bounds would get the job. jMO. To hell with trying to put back spin on it and kill it inside the 5. Just don't shank the damned thing to the wrong side of the field.

What’s your answer to the problem? Just pick one inconsistent shanker?

Even if they plan to, I don't think I would ever say it out loud...just really is a bad look. The fact we are even in this position is an abysmal failure on all fronts by this coaching staff.
I mean Cerni is on scholarship....wtf are we doing, this guy couldn't kick for Scottsbluff High School, much less the Nebraska fkin Cornhuskers...

After listening to the assistant coaches at the press conference talk about special teams, I am 100% convinced they don’t actually practice special teams and have zero clue how to even approach practicing it, if they did.

I am also certain the “emphasis” they put on it, was just them telling the players, “special teams are important, so try harder when you’re out there doing it.” So yes, they put an “emphasis” on it, but they didn’t actually do anything to fix it and threw CTB back there to make people believe they cared.

Totally agree with the open tryout. It’s near impossible for me to fathom that an open tryout couldn’t yield better results than what we’ve seen. Even if it’s just for a week to send a message. The two we have are massive liabilities. Even taking out Cerni’s misdirection error, the punting has been awful.
Cerni was just the the final straw.

I mean for crying out loud, we have 2 separate punters (neither of which are good), a different place kicker and then a different kickoff specialist. We have 4 different guys on this team and maybe the place kicker and kickoff specialist are worth a darn - I just can't believe this crew is that incompetent to allow this nonsense to go on week after week. I'm not sure what is worse, the fact that we stink to holy hell on all facets of kicking or that we really don't seem to know how to correct the problem. That situation alone makes me ready to move on from Frost, I think if he knew how to fix the problem, it would have been done so already...

Wouldn't the simplest thing be to just kick it high and straight forward? Should give coverage team time to get to return man and force a fair catch. Just thinking out loud.

Got to use someone. Do you think one has done anything to claim the job?

Agreed, one has to be used.

But we might as well use two place kickers- one for when the ball is on the left hash and the other when the ball is on the right hash 🤷

Remember he was brought in by the former "special teams consultant" who was fired by Frost after last season. If I remember correctly, I believe the left footed shanker was brought in by Riley.

Lane McCallum anyone? Dude did it all in HS and committed as a kicker to Air Force. I’m sure there are others on the team who kicked and punted that could be serviceable.

Frost might have to consider anything from the Husker 40 forward to be 4 down territory.
The part that cracked me up is when Beckton said "we might've sent Nixon back to return punts, but he didn't make the travel roster. " Okie dokie Coach.

But we have at least 4 different kickers travel on a 70 man roster....6% of our travel roster are dedicated to guys who have one fkin job and mostly do it badly...I also heard we traveled with only 3 QBs....but we need 4 kickers, JFC

Agreed. 100+ high level athletes on the football team alone, one of the players has to be more servicable than our current punters.

SF doesn't want to hurt feelings though......

I am of the opinion there is probably the 140th guy on the roster that is a walk-on "possession" receiver from McCook that could kick better than these guys have. Take the snap and boot the shit out of it towards the sideline. Probably have a net average of 35 yards doing just that. Instant upgrade. Boom. I fixed the problem. Sort of.

Nebraska is the land of turning the simple into the “not so simple because it’s a little more intricate when the details matter and we rep our scheme’s a lot and feel like we’re super close to getting it right and we’ll get it fixed- these guys know their jobs and I trust them to get it done.”

We should also give some credit to Brandon Franke who has been pretty consistent booming kickoffs for touchbacks, despite (or credited to) arriving here just a few months ago.

There’s plenty of youtube videos about how to punt a football that can teach the skills our non-special teams coordinators cannot.
I would hedge a hefty wager Franke could get it down in a week and give us solid results.

…oh and he was a high school soccer goalie, which means he’s actually, ya know, punted a ball before.

As bad as these two have been, I think I would have open try outs on campus. I bet there is a couple of former high school punters who could beat these two out. What a shit show.
We use to be known for great punters(Foltz, Erstad, Koch) and kickers (Browns, Henry, Maher) . I will never downplay special teams again. Man do we lose yards and more importantly games, because of their sorry asses.

It makes you appreciate Lightbourne - at least a little bit.

You left out the part about him being obsessed with fixin stuff.

Good news!!!!

Callahan on KFAB (I think that's who I heard say this) said that he recalls interviewing Lightbourn in Frost's first year. Caleb said he really missed his old special teams coach (under Riley) because he helped him out a lot. Lightbourn said now (at the time of the interview), I'm pretty much on my own.

I remember that quote too. After Foltz is when things really started to tank.
Lightbourne had a leg but was wildly inconsistent, and we’ve never recovered.

Other teams manage, but the cap on direct instruction coaches seems antiquated. There was talk of ncaa allowing one more, and we could use it. We need a full time ST coach, but it also means not keeping one of the positions we got.
