I am not trying to defend any current coaches or push them out the door. Losing and mediocrity should never be what Nebraska Football strives for. Lots of other factors than head coach salary go into expected success, I just found the information interesting.

Riley is ranked #41 in national head coach pay.
Riley is ranked #11 of 14 in Big Ten coach pay, above Indiana, Rutgers, Maryland.

Riley has the 11th highest buyout among Big Ten head coaches(2 schools do not list a buyout amount).
Riley has the 41st highest buyout of nationally listed teams.

I am not agreeing or disagreeing, there were many signs and predictions, especially from the media, that this was going to be a horrible year.

With that in mind, last year's team won 9 games after winning only six the previous year. Things were not necessarily in a downward trend until the first game of the season happened and then with Oregon's first half.

I do not know what Riley's contract was before, but I assume it was something like a rolling four years for the most part (and thus extended) which is common for recruiting purposes, so they say.

In hindsight it definitely sucks that he received an extension if he is indeed going to be fired at the end of the season.

Maybe we should have attempted to start a trend where football coaches are on a one or two-year contract to keep them extra motivated!

Well said... I guess my view is win something of importance first then we'll pay you. The only team they beat last year of any significance off the top of my head was Minnesota.

Yes. Why up the pay when giving an extension IF the coach has not done well? An extension is fine, but why increase the pay when said coach has been around a couple years without any wins to prove the coach is worth more money?

Same with buyouts. A coach wants a big buyout? Earn it first.

No. 90% of this part is sarcasm, while the other 15% is me just being a smartass.

Recruiting against a school that has a head coach with a 1 or 2 year contract? Ouch. Easy to convince kids not to go there.

In our situation, Riley did nothing to earn an extension, but with how coaches contracts work in this business, unfortunately an extension has to be done... imo.

I would like to see Nebraska flex some muscle when it comes to paying coaches. I think the tremendous fan support the program receives warrants it.

However, I'd also like Nebraska to buck the trend and stop giving into agent's forcing schools into big buy outs and undeserved contract extensions. I have read all the arguments in favor of such things, but I just don't think it makes any sense. In college football, if you're successful your coach is going to continue to be there. If you're not winning then your coach is going to get fired. It's really that simple. These contracts have very little to do with anything.
