Several Big 12 schools were not fond of the idea of joining Texas in a Pac-16 league. There were high-level talks back in the realignment heydey and there was discussion of possibly five Big 12 teams joining the then 11-member Big Ten. Oklahoma, Iowa State, Texas A&M, and Kansas had talks of going to the Big Ten with Nebraska.

Under this scenario, the Big Ten would have looked like this:

Division A
Iowa
Iowa State
Kansas
Minnesota
Nebraska
Oklahoma
Texas A&M
Wisconsin

Division B
Illinois
Indiana
Michigan
Michigan State
Northwestern
Ohio State
Penn State
Purdue
