I catch that show once and a while and man is that thing dumb...like, I want to shoot my brains out after 5 minutes...but Gawd help me I can't turn away. It was our fave as a family growing up and I love me some classic country music....so I watch.

1. Carol Burnett - and it's not close
I agree with that. I'll throw out the Donnie & Marie Show for an honorable mention.

Everything is cyclical. I'm surprised some of today's multi-talented stars haven't tried their hand at doing a variety show.

Exactly! As I read your post I was picturing you and a big breasted woman coming out of the corn and you saying "That show is dumb!" and her asking "How dumb is it?" and so on.... it was must see TV in my "formative" years.

There were some truly great musicians on "Hee Haw," including Buck Owens and Roy Clark. They also had Loretta Lynn, Charley Pride, Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, Garth Brooks, Conway Twitty, George Jones, Merle Haggard, and Tammy Wynette,

Pretty much all of them had the opportunity to join in a rendition of "Pfft You Were Gone!"

Then I'd say they underperformed in terms of the talent available.

Well - you must not have reached puberty yet when Carol Burnett was on because hands down the best variety show was Dean Martin and the Golddiggers. Granted, Vicki Lawrence was sorta hot, but didn't hold a candle to any of the Golddiggers.

And BTW, Golddiggers who went on to fame included Jayne Kennedy as NFL announcer, actress Susan Buckner who played among other roles Patty Simcox in Grease, Cathy Lee Crosby, and Loyita Chapel.

Forced to watch Lawrence Welk at my grandparents house when young.
That was torture.
I've seen it a few times as an adult, and while campy, isn't really that bad.

My grandma was a quiet, kind, unassuming woman. But if you said a word during The Lawrence Welk show, she would shout ‘WELK!’ and shoot you a look that would burn a hole through your soul. You keep your damn yap shut during Welk.

I was in same boat, but as I got older I realized it was kind of cool for a farmer’s son from North Dakota make it big in Hollywood. And some of his musician’s were BOSS!
