Taking less money. Wish Miles could hold a staff together, besides just Molinari.

Hmmmm after all that talk about Becker breathing some life into the offense last year and going forward. Back to the drawing board....again.

His impact was questionable at best. IMO, we can do better and will have better candidates to replace what was a last minute addition last year. The timing is much better on this with the NCAA tournament just getting over. There will be lots of guys looking to move.

The question I have is, would you want to be an assistant on Miles staff right now?

I hope you're right...can't imagine many great assistants lining up to coach under Miles considering his lack of success the past few years and a coach approaching the hot seat.

It appears that working under Miles is not for everyone (or almost anyone maybe). Not a good sign imo.

I would go to work for Miles in a heartbeat. He hired the guy at the last minute last year. He/we didn't have the luxury of doing a thorough search of qualified guys that were available that would also be a good fit. Miles has had several guys stick with him for a lot of years climbing the ranks. I wouldn't be surprised to see Miles hire somebody with some ties to big men in the AAUs. Miles has done some good things and we've got some good young talent. Lots of people will be interested in this opening and I wouldn't be so sure that Beckner wasn't coaxed to leave.

You must be dizzy from all that spinning. It'll be tough for Miles to keep this job if they have another losing record next season (he'd probably get one more yr after next still, but maybe not if things went really bad).

I understand the situation on this but it's still hard to realize we just lost an assistant to BOISE ST basketball.

I'd go hire the decision maker of the highest rated guy on the board over 6'9" that is still available for next yr if I were Miles....

As has already been mentioned, not as hard to believe when he already has history with the coaches there...

Nebraska will have the most talent on its roster next season since the team with Jaron Boone, Erick Strickland, etc. Turning a program from a habitual loser into a winner does not come overnight but I believe Miles has them on the right path. This season was a disappointment, no doubt, because they had potential. A few untimely injuries and frankly just some bad bounces hurt what could have been a better season. No, the team this year wasn't going to compete for a B1G title without a big man, but they could have easily finished in the top half of the conference.

Losing Shields next season will be felt, but there is an opening for White and Webster to take the leadership of this team. Watson will get better (in my opinion, he needs a couple more years before he will have a big impact), and Morrow will have a quantum leap next season (in my opinion, his upside is higher than anyone on the team.)

The team is set up to accomplish big things and I won't cry over losing a one year assistant coach.

So no excuses next year and beyond right? If we near the bottom in the Big Ten...Miles is to blame? Curious...where do you think next years team will be projected preseason?

There are always excuses. Injuries mainly. I do think Miles has earned two more seasons to start seeing more sustained success. Certainly, it appears that next year will again be a year without a serious big man. That instantly limits what the team can do, but I do believe we will see performances beyond the bottom of the Big Ten in the next two seasons. I don't think I can predict an NCAA bid next season, though it is not out of the question.

Just curious what he did to earn two more years (which I think he'll get no matter what)?

That might be the best fence straddler statement I've ever read: "I don't think I can predict an NCAA bid next season, though it is not out of the question" In that regard, every team that isn't on sanctions could technically make the tournament...

Which can be directly tied to Miles inability to get it done on the recruiting trail. With that said, I'm not throwing in the towel in a big man yet...we will sign one...but will he be able to produce solid minutes next year? That's iffy.

Too much staff turnover is not ideal, but Beckner will not be a big loss from what I've heard. Not particularly well-liked and hasn't done anything on the recruiting trail. There's a reason he was still available for hire last August.

We should be more concerned if Miles can't find a Big man instead of a asst. Coach leaving the program

Next years excuses?
1. New staff member
2. Bad luck with the Big Ten schedule (Might as well toss that one in right now)
3. No big man

Anything else?

One would have to think that an ageing Pinnacle Bank Arena has to be in there somewhere. How can he recruit to an old barn that's 3 years old?

If you read Miles' comments to the World-Herald, it's pretty clear that Beckner will not be missed:

Miles said Monday he didn’t ask Beckner to leave but noted that Beckner’s “fit” into the program became a talking point.

“As we got toward the end of the season, we evaluated everything we do,” Miles said. “As we evaluated everybody’s role and where we’re trying to go, I think Phil is better off in the West. I think it’s really better for everybody.

Seemed Beckner was his whipping boy at times when things were going sideways. Apparently Molinari and his ineffective defense are not a problem.

So it was another swing and a miss by Miles? It didn't sound like Burno was well liked in his short time at Nebraska as well. Let's hope Miles lands a worthwhile coach this go around....he won't get many more chances.

I think you might be right. One has to wonder if quality available asst coaches see the sideways trend and back away? Hopefully not and he isn't left picking from the best of the scrap pile.
