Basketball squad

Didn't know that. That explains a bunch. He looked really passive and almost afraid to shoot the ball and when he did he had trouble drawing iron. The rest of the team really needed to pick up some slack but other than Shields we got nothing from the rest of them. I know we're banged up and playing a bunch of freshmen but man our offense never got going until it was almost too late and then that stupid foul by White at the end.....
I'm not 100% sure that was a foul by White. I replayed it and it looked like he had all ball and the ref that called it had a horrible view and was all the way over by the Penn State bench. If you can, look at it again. The PSU players body was blocking the ref. Horrible anticipation call IMO. He guessed that it was a foul.

If we lose out, that will be 18 losses in three of his four seasons. Losing our best player in Shields, 18 losses could be on the horizon again next year.
I think this team will be better next year. Those freshmen will have a year under their belts. Anton Gill will replace Benny Parker-- opposing coaches will not like that switch! Webster will be a senior. Webster in his last year and Watson in year two with Gill could be one of the better backcourts in the Big 10. White will be one of the best 3's as well.

Even if Miles doesn't bring in a big man who can play right away, look for Jacobsen to make some big strides defending the post in his second year. He plays with confidence, has a nice right hand hook when he anchors and is a better athlete than I first thought. Ed Morrow, if healthy and used properly, could be Nebraska's Clarence Weatherspoon at the 4 spot. He's a double double waiting to happen and a match up nightmare if he develops-- granted that's a big if given his foot issues.

Big men take time to develop. Hammond should be able to provide up to 20 minutes a game next year. McVeigh is effective as long as he's not stuck guarding a top level big. He'll be better next year as well.

I look for a team that will get in the conversation for an NCAA tourney bid. They should be better next year.

It will be hard for them not to be better. If for some odd reason they are not...Miles better start updating his resume. We should be better...I have a hard time seeing them being in the big dance discussion though. Anton Gill will need to be very good.

No foul there that I saw. Just typical horrible officiating.

White actually did grab the arm of the player with the ball. But it was because he was shoved by another PSU player and off balance, so I'm pretty sure he was just grabbing to keep from going down. He wasn't even looking at the player with the ball when he reached out and grabbed his arm initially. PSU was beating the crap out of all our players trying to run the baseline all night. The rule changes this year were supposed to clean that up, but I guess the refs last night didn't get the memo. Most of the time this year I haven't been able to complain about the Big Ten officiating. It's been generally ok to poor, but the bad calls have evened out and not really helped or hurt either team. But the last 2 games have been head scratchers.

For the first half and perhaps a little more of the season, it did seem like most games were being called at least close to the intent of the new rules (not that there weren't still bad calls). However, I have noticed in watching games the last couple of weeks that many refs seem to be regressing toward the old calls. There seems to be a lot more contact allowed, particularly under the basket, fewer free throws being shot and I think scoring has dropped off. The problem for players who are playing more physical due to the decrease in foul calls the last few weeks, is that when they get into NCAA play, I think many refs tend to call most games pretty tight. I think the NCAA will re-emphasize the need to follow the new rules, and you are going to again see a lot of fouls called. The real problem is they let some stuff go and then make headscratcher ticky-tack calls somewhere else, killing any consistency and players are again confused on what they can or can't do.

Nebraska basketball fans are just like Chicago Cub fans=wait until next year.
Excellent observation. Iowa should have fired their football coach after years of disappointment. Cubs should never be where they are and should just give up... except for the fact that they are currently the favorites to win the WS next year.

Sometimes you have to take the long approach to turn things around. The quick fix can sometimes be effective, but if you believe you have the right man in place, you have to ride it out to let the results come in. I am a Miles believer and will support him in turning this around.

Years of disappointment for Iowa basketball? You do realize Fran has had one losing season in six years? That was the year he took over for Todd Lickliter. You also realize in the last 42 years, Iowa basketball has missed post season play, NCAA or NIT, 13 times. Three of those times were under Lickliter. Nebraska basketball fans would love to have the same kind of success.

My point is; everyone is excited to begin the season. Yet, with the exception of one run, it has not worked out as most have hoped for.

I love this. It really hasn't worked out as we'd hoped. And now lots of fans are "hoping" for an NIT next year. That's exactly how we felt with DOC and Barry. These young guys are good. If we're not in the mix for the NCAA next year, I'll be disappointed. I'm tired of hoping for the NIT.

Not everyone shares your thoughts. Matter of fact, very few I know share what you're saying & are very much looking forward to the future.

Miles made some serious mistakes with his recruiting (transfers) early on and it hurt the results. It impacted us last year, and it impacted us this year as well. He did something about it though and signed back to back classes, including Anton Gill as a transfer, that are the best collection of talent Nebrasketball has had in 20 (+/-) years.

If you're not excited or happy, that's your choice, I'm not interested in changing your mind. That "one run" is something that hasn't happened since the 90's. And with the collection of talent currently on the roster, the additions a few months away from being added, it continues to look good for Nebrasketball.

Shortsighted opinion is what you have, and that's your choice. But not everyone agrees with it, that's for sure.

I did mean football - sorry, there are several examples of teams that take a long approach and ultimately get the payout because they stay the course. There are rare occasions where a guy can come in and flip the performance overnight, but it is rare for a reason - it's not an easy job.

Miles is a definite improvement over Barry and Doc but if we don't make the NCAA next year then it's time to move on. I can't handle anymore mediocre football and basketball. Get this shit fixed already. Pretty f'n sickening when Creighton is better than us year in and year out lately. I like our young players but if we don't get a 6'10 or bigger guy that can actually play we are screwed.

I agree that Nebraska has talent on the roster. The sky is the limit for Watson, and Jacobson/Morrow/McVeigh have all flashed promise this year. I am also excited to see what Gill will bring to this squad.

I am only saying that I am disappointed in what looks like a third losing season under Miles. I thought we would be better this year.I do think we have to stay the course with him for at least two more seasons and evaluate after that.

NCAA next year? You make it sound like we were a regular in the ncaa before Miles. The best class in like 20 years will only be sophomores next season, ridiculous.

I can see if we finish with 18 losses next year maybe, but this year was even a very competitive team in one of the best leagues. They failed to finish and be consistent, but that is common for non 5 star young guys.

we'll have a Kansas transfer who's pretty damn good, a Louisville transfer that is supposedly better than White. Miles has been here long enough, it's time to produce or move on.

Uh, Creighton has more tournament wins then Nebraska has appearances.

In our conference, Ohio State, Michigan State, and Indiana have more Final 4 appearances than Nebraska has tournament appearances. Michigan and Illinois have 5, Wisky 4, and Iowa 3.

I've been critical of Miles when I felt it was necessary, but throwing him to the curb after next year would be foolish, and just perpetuate the belief that Nebraska is a basketball coaching graveyard. I don't care what Brinks truck you pack with cash, no established NCAA coach will come here.

I'm on the downside to 50 and no one fan wants to see Nebraska relevant in hoops more than me, but you can't undo decades of futility in 4 years. We've been mediocre in hoops for a loooooooong time. Our biggest basketball moments are an NIT Championship, NIT final four, and a Big 8 tournament championship, and none of those happened in the lifetime of any current basketball recruit. The facilities are very nice, but that will at best be a tie breaker with a recruit, it won't be a reason to come here.

I agree, just one decent defensive and rebounding post player could make a huge difference, and could lead us to FINALLY getting an NCAA tournament victory.

Creighton does have more tournament wins than Nebraska....most schools do. But, that's no excuse for us to get our ass beat by them on a yearly basis...especially under Miles. They are a tough matchup for us based on what we want to do devensively...and what they want to do offensively...and they have won that battle the last 4 years under Miles. One would think he may try to defend them differenty one of these years but it's not looking promising.

That I agree with. Sometimes I wonder if McDermott should be paying rent for the space it seems he has in Miles head. Give CU credit, they scheme and game plan against Nebraska well.

Yeah, I see what you are saying. I just think Anton Gill should be a major upgrade over Bennie Parker. White will take over Shields' spot. I just project all of these other kids to be better individually and they will jell as a team much more quickly.

I am not counting on the incoming frosh to do much more than help off the bench. Roby will need some time but his potential is very good. I'm hoping Morrow can log 30 minutes a game at the four spot. He and Jacobson should be a force on the offensive glass. If things click and Morrow is healthy (and Miles uses him properly), this team should get in the top 8 of the conference and contend for 20 wins. If they do that, there will be NCAA tourney talk. More likely to go to the NIT of course.

Unfortunately there is not very many Spartan fans around these parts....nor do we compete with MSU in recruiting. It's great we have done wel vs MSU...but Creighton is a rival and his 0-4 record vs Creighton is a black eye for Miles. He needs to beat them next year in Lincoln.

Agree. I know their program is better, but I just hate losing to them. I really think losing to Creighton 4 years in a row is affecting my overall attitude about progress under Miles. These freshman will do great things, and will hopefully be worth the wait.

Throwing my hat in the ring...I think we pull off the upset tonight vs Purdue. Not an easy matchup for us with their height but a good spot for us IMO.
