I’ve seen stories about UNO guys in the portal and CU getting someone. Any Nebrasketball portal news or are the the coaches focused on the Crown?

Pryce Sandfort (Iowa) visited yesterday. McCollum is going to push hard to keep him. Haven't heard of any other visitors lined up.

Supposedly Creighton paid $2 million for Freeman from Iowa. If players like him are getting paid that much, it's going to be hard for us to get anyone good, unless the NIL budget has increased significantly.

What was the NIL budget?

It's always interesting to hear these types of numbers-influenced conversations. I am NOT any kind of financial or athletic smart guy...but on the surface, we already spend lets say $2.5m on a roster. And an ACC coach is saying $6 or $7m to compete in the ACC, which I assume means a tournament bid. To me, it would be a good investment to spend the extra lets say $4m to get that roster up to speed - I would think it would pay for itself with the added revenue from tournament entry, more PBA revenue, and other money coming in. Again, Im probably being really simplistic about things - but when Saban was making $10m at Bama, that seemed ludicrous...but I promise you, the admins thought that was a bargain relative to the amount of money that came into that university through its various football-related revenues and still pays off to this day.

And I would think the head coach with the ridiculous contract would be willing to funnel a nice chunk towards doing that.

Jays trying to go from being a slow un-athletic team to a SLOWER un-athleticer team. Interesting strategy!

Freeman is a guy you get when the other 4 players on your team are long, athletic and can play defense.

If correct, big if, that would be what we spent, not necessarily what we had to spend.
Like we both said before, it is sort of some guess work. The players are smart to leak out how much they get and they are even smarter to lie about it and make it higher. That will just continue to drive up the price.

With that said, if there are guys that pay for porn when it is free all over, there will be boosters that donate a lot of money to help get some players.

You're not wrong but can attendance really go up? They're redoing pba court to keep fans happy 😊

Hard to say...I was there for the Maryland game, mostly full, very passive crowd...people left early etc. Prob not a gold mine but enough slack in the hose that it would be worthwhile to fill up, especially over the course of 20 home games

Maybe administration taking note. As long as they're making money why change. Fans have to vote with their wallets and attendance drops are easily noticed and feared

In hindsight, I would have taken Freeman over Morgan & Meah. Probably would have cost the same NIL $$ of both those 2 (had he been in the portal last year). Same with Sandfort over Essegian or Gavins.

Having those 2 average Iowa guys probably gets us into the NCAAs. Of course, their Iowa production is predicated on Iowa's offense, which seems to be able to put up points and get open looks a lot better than Hoiberg's.

Fran loves offense over defense. So he doesn't mind slow non-athletes as long as they can shoot.

I know Fran is off to Penn now and honestly, that will be a great spot for him. The Ivy league is filled with those types of players and Fran will do really well there. Won't shock me at all if they lead the Ivy in scoring next year and win the Ivy Tourney.

The problem isn’t the administration not being willing to spend money for basketball players. The problem is our DONORS not being willing or able to pay enough for basketball players.

Wow. Penn hired that lunatic? I watched a fair number of Ivy League games while my kid was out there. Fran seems like an awful fit for that league.

Fran is gonna be a psychotic ass clown no matter where he goes. But I tend to agree with BTF69, his style of offense may do very well in the Ivy league. Bottom line, if Fran rips off a chair leg and stabs an opposing coach or player to death it won’t be one of ours. Which is a relief IMO…

Surely they put a behavior clause in his contract. From what I saw watching multiple Ivy League games over 3 years, they didn’t tolerate coaches losing their minds. I saw coaches and players T’d up for extremely mild protests. Never heard a single magic word from a coach. Fran will get tossed early and often if he doesn’t zip his lips.

Hope so, that will make for some good TV and/or sports talk radio banter. I’m always game for a good train wreck as long as it doesn’t affect me personally. 🤣

I think Freeman is similar to Kalkbrenner. About the same size. He was co freshman of the year last year and averaged about 16 a game. So he’s decent. I think he’s McDermott’s kind of guy. I’d like Nebraska to go get some size like that with the potential to score.

Shows you how little I have paid attention to Coug basketball and if he is a bad comparison to Meah he has to be bad. The Cougs like to recruit Aussies.
I wouldn’t say Cluff is worse than Meah - just less athletic. He’ll land somewhere but won’t be a big get.

Isn't the $22m overall for all sports?

You pay extra for BB and that's less for football.

I don’t know what to think of the reported numbers. Few weeks ago on here I said I saw Creighton gave Kalkbrenner 1.6 mil to return. I was told that was BS Creighton doesn’t even spend close to that on all players. Now they are giving $2 mil to freeman?

Those numbers are realistic.

Well what else would Creighton have to spend their NIL on? Of course they spend it on basketball.

The only reason they have any NIL is because of basketball, the $2M spent on Freeman would happen at a school with football as well. Are you attempting to excuse away Nebraska’s situation with portal player?

Saw Marquel Sutton’s post on X about entering the portal….responses are littered by people saying he’s a Husker, come to Lincoln, GBR…..Nebraska fans are frothing at the mouth to pick up guys out of the Summit League.

Creighton has plenty of alumni high up in the finance industry and basketball is their main sport. They have one of the highest NIL budgets for basketball in the Big East and beyond.

Baylor Scheierman was a Summit league player.

this^

Spending any NIL money on basketball just to stay mediocre that could be going toward football seems like a huge waste of money. NU basketball has always been and always will be mediocre, at best. At least the football program has a chance not to be.

And some if not most of the Omaha NIL money that could help NU basketball goes to Creighton.
