Not a big loss if we can find a better talent...three open scholorships, will this be the first year Miles fills out the entire roster? Continuing to use 12 scholorships or less is not a good look....let's hope he can utilize the 3 available.
I'm not sure I agree that we WANT to play with holes on the roster...There's something fishy going on in the basketball program right now. I get that Evelyn wasn't a huge need guy, but it's not like we should WANT to be playing with holes on the roster. The departures are starting to look awfully odd to me.
With the transfer getting elgible Evelyn wasn't going to play barring a rash of injuries.I'm not sure I agree that we WANT to play with holes on the roster...
If Miles suggested that Evelyn move on, I would think he has to have someone he thinks will do better, doesn't he? Just asking the question, don't know the anwer.

Evelyn didn't do much when he got playing time and he shot around 30% from the field. I don't think his minutes will be hard to fill. It's funny, some people had suggested that Hammond, Evelyn and Fuller were waste of scholarships now all of a sudden some of those same people are questioning why 2 of the 3 are leaving....So Roby will be getting alot of minutes next year? Seems risky to bank on that considering he's a true freshman.
yep and I think we'll land another guy better than Evelyn.I think he is referencing Anton Gill (transfer from Louisville who had to sit out this yr but is eligible next season) not Roby...

I wondered why we took him in the first place. We had plenty of guards and his only other offers were no-name schools like Loyola Chicago and Oakland.

needed bodies and the kid had good stats. Hammond we recruited hoping he would fill out and get stronger. We aren't likely getting any one and done bigs. We are going to have to build them.I recall stating as much last year. Was a backup point guard that important when we needed a post. Others blasted away even after I pointed out that Webster and Parker could share back up duties on most nights.
Clearly, this kid was a long shot from the start. Like Hammond, I wonder why we recruited him to begin with.

Or maybe he A) didn't want to put in the work required to develop himself physically and/or B) didn't play the way he was coached to play. I was hoping Hammond would stick around and get bigger and stronger to at least take up some space in the paint. He didn't. Next.True. But Miles had to know what he was getting when he recruited Hammond. Don't bring a kid in and then bench him and criticize him so heavily early in his career. Just look at the kid when he got here... he was going to need a couple years to play in the Big 10. He needed to be redshirted. You have to be patient with big guys if you want to develop them. And you have to coach them. They need a coach who specializes in recruiting and developing big guys. As it is now, coaching big guys is a rotating job. Watch them play defense in the low post. No technique. Zero. It's all just on your own, do what you want defense.

In the absence of trusting the process and affording time to deliver, what would be your solution?Trust the process...they said. He just needs more time...they said.

The team could go after a known rule "bender" to get in talent, but when that coach is caught or leaves, the team could be in worse shape than when he got here. Maybe that rule-bender gets an NCAA win or two, but do you want that?
The team could go after proven winners, but likely be left at the altar because none of those guys are going to come to Nebraska.
Instead the team did what I would have done. They went after a guy who is a good face of the program. He has been successful at building teams from scratch and making them successful. Now, you wait and you bet on your approach that it will pan out. Coming from a team that had achieved very little success in the past, I think that is the best course of action.
The point being made was that he had proven the ability to build a team/program at previous stops. That's why he was hired, to do here what he did elsewhere. It doesn't take 6-7 years to build a team/program. March 2018 we will likely have our answer in regards to Miles. He needs to start trending upward again starting next year. He better have a hell of a couple months on the recruiting trail as he's going to continue to find out it's really hard to get things done in a legit conference without a solid big man. I'm not sure I can take another year of having to watch us double the post or guys like Padron going off on us.

Nebraska can't just attract top coaches like big time programs, so you do your homework, see who has built something elsewhere and go after them. Will it work here? Guess it still remains to be seen, but his track record has been good at previous stops...

Nebraska caught lightning in a bottle the year they made the NCAA tournament. Take out that outlier, the team improved from 2014 to 2015. The 2014 team (virtually the same team) wasn't all that great. Petteway caught fire and the team ran with a lot of momentum. That shows how quickly a season can come together, and I believe this team has that potential next year. White's the best shooter Nebraska has seen in several years. I think Webster began to figure out his game as a driver to the hoop. If he can get his 3 point accuracy up a bit (I was surprised to see he shot 35% last year) and McVeigh, Morrow, Jacobson, Watson all improve (as they should), this team shouldn't suffer from Shields' departure. Granted, I loved Shields, but moderate improvement by the other players should reduce the blow. Watson shooting 39% from the field and 27% from 3PT is something that can instantly improve. I think he should be shooting all off season and with some firm coaching, his game can make a quantum leap.Oh I get why he was hired....and I'm sure Osborne really liked how Miles knew Nebraska and recruited Nebraska kids. And he still may get the job done....but we have been trending in the wrong direction and he needs to reverse that very soon. Striking out left and right for solid big man, the inability to utilize all open scholorships is not going to get it done. Like I said, important next couple months for Miles.
Not filling out acholarships (free money for goodness sakes) is an Osborne-hire trait.Oh I get why he was hired....and I'm sure Osborne really liked how Miles knew Nebraska and recruited Nebraska kids. Similar to the thought about not canning a coach before he's had enough time, I also don't want to see DONU hang on longer than necessary and cause more damage to what feels like progress. I get why he was hired at the time, but do we give him another 5?In the absence of trusting the process and affording time to deliver, what would be your solution?

And hence we're looking for a new assistant coach that can hopefully bring something more to the table in recruiting. We have 3 guys that can play the point on scholarship and Miles has been recruiting other guards. We absolutely need a big but so does virtually every other team in America that has NU's basketball history. They don't grow on trees. Miles is has a big visiting this weekend. Losing Evelyn is not a big deal. He looked like a scorer when he was recruited and he is as long as a 30% shooting clip against B1G defenses is okay. You never are quite sure what a kid is going to do when he moves up a notch in competition.Oh I get why he was hired....and I'm sure Osborne really liked how Miles knew Nebraska and recruited Nebraska kids. Don't remember his name. I think I heard it on 590 a couple of days ago. If I remember correctly he's a 6-10 250ish kind of JUCO kid. Visiting without an offer. Supposedly we're in on some other guys so haven't offered this kid yet.Finding solid big men to compete right away is not easy....but, all you have to do is watch a weekend of college basketball and there are plenty of mid major teams who land/develop bigs that could help us. Simply put, Miles has failed on that front and we have paid the price. Who is the big man visiting this weekend?

You're right. In Nebraska's case, it takes more like 30 years to build a program, as evidence by our history.
Oakland has made the NCAA tourney a couple times in the last few years, Loyola Chicago actually won the NCAA Division 1 title in 1963. just sayin.
In any event, the pool Evelyn is jumping into is pretty crowded - more than 700 college basketball players will transfer to another school this year.
Danny Nee also brought in big men, including Rich King who actually played a few years in the NBA.Danny Nee had 4 straight NCAA tournament appearances after his fourth year. Hopefully Miles goes on a similar run....but, he may need to do work on the recruiting trail the next few months to get us out of the bottom of the Big Ten.
