Bad News

If we do not get Sarrell we just move on and start looking for next year as soon as possible. It seems to me we are getting better players. It will take some time and a lot of effort but I think we will get back to having a great offensive line in a few years.

I am not disappointed we did not get Sarrell. I wanted him at NU, of course, but never thought we would land him anyway.
I am more disappointed that our plan B guy is not someone a lot of good teams want. Looks like a typical Pelini "end of cycle scramble" type of recruit. Hopefully he works out.
Really need to recruit better lineman next year now. Success on the field next year just got that much more critical

This late if you are firing off offers to recruits with offers from the south Dakotas, Montana, Illinois state and Wyoming it means you didn't have a plan B or you have already F'd up your plan B
True. But this is just one position. Sure, it was a position of need and I do not know why we could not recruit better guys to come here for that spot, but it is not the end of the world. We are still in on some quality recruits at other positions and may still end this recruiting cycle on a high note.
But to say I am disappointed in both the play of our offensive line this year AND in our offensive line recruiting is an understatement. I hope coach Riley is taking a good long look at that situation. He has shown he is capable of making changes if he thinks the coach is at fault.

on the Sarrell front...

Congratulations to Chris though!

Very nice of you to offer congratulations to the Lincoln, Nebraska teen after putting his picture and news of his offer under the heading: "Bad News".

Might be the worst single thing I've seen done to a potential recruit after getting an offer. And I've been around a long time.

I don't really think I'm too far out in left field here. Schaefer echoed basically the exact same thought just before Christmas

"I don't think Nebraska needs to bring one in - that's the point of Jameis and Sichterman. It would be really good for class, but at least eggs aren't all sitting on Filiaga and Sarell"

Folks I trust more than myself really like both the OT's we have on-board right now, and Clouse has been pretty adamant that Sichterman might be one of the most under rated players we have. Jaimes has turned some heads late as well.

They also have offers from coaches I trust: Herman and Patterson offered Jaimes, and Narduzzi and Dantonio (among others) offered Sichterman.

You'll have to excuse me if I'm not a little bit excited about the potential of these young men, they could have easily chosen schools with much more recent success on the big stage than us. We didn't save them from having to attend CSU and Wyoming.

Although with Bohl's track record of identifying talent he can use to regularly embarrass Power 5 programs, I'll take his vote of confidence with Walker as a development project, any day.
Bohl has proven he can take these kids and coach them. You know how coaches do more than recruit? Actual coaching?
So far our staff hasnt proven it can coach kids up.

It must be a surprise to the coaches as it appears we have initiated our annual northern assault where we start poaching recruits with Wyoming and Dakota offers
Careful....this doesnt fit the narrative. " Weve been on this kid and wanted him from the get go. Timing was all part of the plan."
(I do like this kid....obviously not an immediate game changer but you never know down the road. Could be underrecruited. Just pointing out the board hypocrisy)

He is an in-state kid who we did not think was as good of a player as some other kids we were after and therefore not worthy of a scholarship offer for most of the year. But we were in on some big time offensive line recruits. So the mere fact of a late offer does not bother me too much with regard to this newest potential recruit.
What bothers me is that no other big time schools have offered this kid. Now, maybe that is because he plays in Nebraska. Who knows? I hope he accepts the offer (no guarantee he will) and I hope he turns into a good contributor for us.

As do i. As i said i have no problem with the kid personally and hope we get him if we want him. Just pointing out how the goal posts move. I expected a few posters to come on here and yell "scrambling! No plan B!" But alas...
Wouldnt it be a wrench though if we do get one of the top tackles AND this kid?? :)

Ha. Yes. I guess the thread could have been titled "Good news" insofar as there is an alternate scenario. The coaches know we are getting Sarrell and so they decided that it was ok to also extend an offer to a kid who will be more of a "project" who will take time to develop. We would, in theory, now have that luxury since Sarrell, in theory, could start right away

Would be a twist. I bet youd wet your pants. As would I.

Recruits? I see one who should have had an offer much earlier as the best lineman in State. What other recruits am I missing?

Just the lineman - so far. A total of zero power 5 schools thought the best lineman in the state was worthy of an offer. Should we offer the best in state player at every position.[/QUOTE]

Cav hasnt produced good results on the field, therefore imo its time he goes. Two most important coaches (not coordinators but coaches) are D-Line 1st, O-Line second. In fact i would even say their equally important as coordinators.

True. Surprised Iowa didn't offer him because all I've heard all year is what a stud he is and can play either side of the ball. Ahh recruiting the annual party where older guys get their hopes dashed by 17 year olds.

Yeah, so what is this kid? A true in-state diamond in the rough who we should have offered sooner, or a last second scramble recruit that nobody else, even Iowa, wanted?

Anybody that really thought we were going to land Sarrell had their head in the clouds. The ONLY reason he even remotely considered NU was Cav. Period. So BECAUSE of Cav we've landed Farniok and at least garnered serious consideration from a kid many believe to be one of the best OT prospects available this year. I like the guys we have committed for the O line. I like the guys we got this last cycle. The sky is not falling because a kid we always thought was going to stay on the west coast decided to actually stay on the west coast. Pelini and his staff wouldn't even have been able to get a call back from that kid but now all the Pelini boot lickers are out in force bashing Cav.

Not sure. If I lived in Nebraska I could tell you. I`ve not seen him play in person but the RSS writers say he is the best in state lineman. That can mean a lot of things depending on the level of competition.

He's a kid that will likely redshirt, bust his ass in the weight room, be at NU for 5 years, and maybe be a starter for his junior and senior year. Sound familiar? The only issue is that we waited on Sarrell so long that he may stick with his Wyoming commitment. I don't see anywhere that he's changed his commitment yet. That sounds familiar too unfortunately.

Hey guys, no matter what happens today as least we know we can always get cheap jerseys of very good quality. Let's count our blessings.

I just ordered one and am now on the phone with my bank because apparently I was charged incorrectly...they added a couple extra 0's to the cost (by accident I'm certain). Can't wait for my cheap Derek Carr jersey to arrive though! #blessed

Better chance of playing early.

Yeah it sounds familiar... like the old recruiting scramble drill that we've become accustomed to.... there's a HUGE gap between these two players

I was thinking more of the way we used to build our O line under Tom, Milt and Young. But go ahead and spin it anyway you want. We rarely had anything but juniors and seniors starting on the O line. If the kid ends up going to Wyoming and starts for 3-4 years the peanut section will bitch for a decade.

So now we are worried that 2 star lineman recruits from a Lincoln High school cannot be flipped from their commitment to Wyoming to play for the Huskers? How far have we fallen? Geez....

There have been multiple Nebraska kids over the past 15 years that we slow played and then offered late who decided to stick with the school that offered them earlier including Wyoming. IMO, it's a reflection on the kid and not NU and our staff. Even though personally when a situation changes (offers), I don't blame a kid for changing his mind, there's something to be said for loyalty.

Marlon Lucky. Also a number of top 100 guys as recently as Lamar Jackson a year ago. Aaron Green, Terrell Newby, etc.

I noticed 3 of the guys you mentioned were commits during the Pelini regime.

Agreed. But this is not just a Nebraska kid. This is a kid from Lincoln who played his high school football in the shadow of Memorial Stadium. I am really hoping that still means something to this young man and he does flip from Wyoming. I could see him being a solid player in three or four years.

There are lots of kids that don't want to go to college in the same town they grew up in. Hell my daughter won't even consider a college in the same state she grew up in.

Historically, NU has pretty much had its way with high school football prospects out of Lincoln. These are not just any kid seeking out a college. If that were true then, of course, you are correct. But when it comes to recruiting D-1 football talent out of Lincoln, at least during the Osborne/Devaney years, it was very rare indeed for us not to get a recruit we wanted.

2 words. Tom Osborne. Times have changed. Secondly, heck even Wyoming has most of its games on TV now. I was a HUGE Husker fan growing up but IF it had been sign with NU and ride the pine for a few years vs going to Wyoming, (an outdoor paradise) and play early, that would have been a tough choice.

Yes, times have changed. My point exactly. And I view the change negatively

Well Tom isn't coming out of retirement and blanket TV coverage isn't going away. You're just turning in to a grumpy old man yelling get off my lawn.Winking I've just spent a ton of time around kids making decisions about where to go to school over the past 30 years and I can tell you that it's MUCH different than it was 25 years ago.

My son played at East with Chris for 4 years and while I don't think that gives me any great insight, my son has mentioned in the past that Chris really wanted a Husker offer. Now if that has changed I don't know, but I doubt it. He clearly wasn't plan A but I know he will work his butt off to prove people wrong. He has a very good motor and a nasty streak on the field. Right now I think he is at least 2-3 off as he is kinda thin and doesn't play with particularly good leverage. He rebuilt his body in high school from a tall kid with some fat to a really lean 275 or so. He did it through really hard work in the weight room and I expect he will keep that up.
