How will Northwestern do in 2017, they have top QB and top RB back, but WR Austin Carr was a senior and top defender LB Anthony Walker declared for the NFL draft.
The 2nd Lt. of the B1G coaches Pat Fitzgerald is coming off back to back good seasons, including a bowl win.
The dumpster fire in Minnesota won a bowl, despite the off the field turmoil and 10 players suspended and many likely terminated from scholarship and enrollment.
P.J. Fleck flew into campus, not sure how he checks all his oars on his flight, but he did invite many from the WMU Class of 2017 to join him. Many appear ready to make jump from a MAC ride to a B1G school. The ND QB would be prudent to check out Minnesota, not Wisconsin for his next stop, right?
Wisconsin has won 2 of the first 3 division titles. Paul Chryst didn't win a National Title, like Bob Stoops in Year 2, but neither did Jim Harbaugh at Michigan. The Badgers performed well from the start with a new DC and a new QB.
They won a bowl game and secured a win over new Minnesota coach P.J. Fleck, who will be looking to end a losing streak between Minnesota-Wisconsin that dates back to 2003.
Iowa beat Nebraska for the first time in 35 years in Iowa City. Both programs have lost some recruits for the Class of 2017 and will be tweeking staffs to find the right mix.
Neither program topped Wisconsin, but were successful over Minnesota. Both programs have at least one nice win over past two seasons against one of the Michigan programs, but also an ugly loss or more.
Illinois and Purdue have a 2nd year and 1st year coach and staff. The future brings hope, but a lot of work ahead.
So, the Year 2017 has arrived. Nebraska basketball is undefeated, with Wisconsin in conference. As a Creighton graduate, congratulations to both programs. I missed a good one Thursday night.
The 2017 B1G race is certainly going to be an interesting one. The Big Ten has some good story lines ahead and the new coaches in the B1G West were good for the division.
Happy New Year.
