B1G West Football for 2017 ...

How will Northwestern do in 2017, they have top QB and top RB back, but WR Austin Carr was a senior and top defender LB Anthony Walker declared for the NFL draft.

The 2nd Lt. of the B1G coaches Pat Fitzgerald is coming off back to back good seasons, including a bowl win.

The dumpster fire in Minnesota won a bowl, despite the off the field turmoil and 10 players suspended and many likely terminated from scholarship and enrollment.

P.J. Fleck flew into campus, not sure how he checks all his oars on his flight, but he did invite many from the WMU Class of 2017 to join him. Many appear ready to make jump from a MAC ride to a B1G school. The ND QB would be prudent to check out Minnesota, not Wisconsin for his next stop, right?

Wisconsin has won 2 of the first 3 division titles. Paul Chryst didn't win a National Title, like Bob Stoops in Year 2, but neither did Jim Harbaugh at Michigan. The Badgers performed well from the start with a new DC and a new QB.

They won a bowl game and secured a win over new Minnesota coach P.J. Fleck, who will be looking to end a losing streak between Minnesota-Wisconsin that dates back to 2003.

Iowa beat Nebraska for the first time in 35 years in Iowa City. Both programs have lost some recruits for the Class of 2017 and will be tweeking staffs to find the right mix.

Neither program topped Wisconsin, but were successful over Minnesota. Both programs have at least one nice win over past two seasons against one of the Michigan programs, but also an ugly loss or more.

Illinois and Purdue have a 2nd year and 1st year coach and staff. The future brings hope, but a lot of work ahead.

So, the Year 2017 has arrived. Nebraska basketball is undefeated, with Wisconsin in conference. As a Creighton graduate, congratulations to both programs. I missed a good one Thursday night.

The 2017 B1G race is certainly going to be an interesting one. The Big Ten has some good story lines ahead and the new coaches in the B1G West were good for the division.

Happy New Year.

Northwestern will contend for the West next year by virtue of playing Penn St, Iowa, Michigan St and Minnesota at Home.. Road games at Wisconsin and Nebraska play part of it but NW has had better success beating Nebraska in Lincoln than beating them in Evanston...

Iowa will have their toughest schedule in the conference since 2013 season by playing Penn St,tOSU and Michigan St and having to play NW, Wisconsin and Nebraska on the road.

Nebraska gets Wisconin, tOSU, Iowa and NW at home so they have a favorable home schedule with games at Penn St and Minnesota in back to back weeks in late November.

Wisconsin again, with Nebraska & Iowa fighting it out for 2nd. The latter both break in new quarterbacks, the former brings back several lineman & their QB.

Transfer/rookie QB ... average backfield ... horrible pass rush ... rough schedule ... Wisky, Herkey, Cats then us.

Didn't both Nebraska and Iowa win in Evanston in 2016 and 2015, respectively.

Does Northwestern have a lot of wins over OSU?

1. Wisconsin, based on consistency
2. Northwestern, based on QB/RB only
3. Iowa or Nebraska, questions and transitions to a new QB, staff changes, etc.
5. Purdue - QB is junior, new coach, so question is will QB fit new system?
6. Illinois - 2nd year coach, no sure #1 at QB
7. Minnesota - new coach and a lot of moving parts, including a new QB and entire new staff one assumes

Why no love for Northwestern? They have pulled out a game against both teams battling for 2nd.

They are capable of beating Wisconsin too!
Mainly because of depth. They lose their top RB, WR, LB. Their line drops a bit, and partly because it's still NW.

Nebraska returns several RB options, several key defenders, and a 'thirst' to return to the top.

Iowa returns potential Heisman candidate at RB, their best WR, 8 of 9 linemen, LB corps, 2 of 4 DB's.

Wisconsin
Northwestern
Iowa
Nebraska
Minnesota
Purdue

Nebraska and Minnesota could flip.

I really like and respect Riley ... but if Nebraska finishes lower than 3rd in the division again his seat should get pretty warm

and FWIW.... I don't give a shit what Northwestern does or does not have coming back .. when we are wringing our hands about how many starters NW or Purdue is returning then we might as well find something better to do on Saturday afternoons than fill that stadium
