Hello folks, I'm back at the impressive Charles Schwab Field for the second round of the 2023 Big Ten Tournament as No. 1 Maryland (38-19) takes on No. 4 Nebraska (32-21-1) with a berth in the semifinals on the line. A win today would give the victorious team a big boost in reaching the championship final on Sunday as it would require them to lose two games on Saturday to be knocked out.
First pitch is set for 6:43 p.m. due to No. 3 Iowa's 9-4 victory over No. 2 Indiana going late.
Nebraska is coming off the heels of a roller coaster win over No. 5 Rutgers Wednesday afternoon as a six-run seventh inning paved the path for a victory thanks to 1.2 shutdown innings from Will Walsh to close it out. Gabe Swansen and Charlie Fischer each belted three-run homers with Swansen's coming during that six-run seventh that put the Huskers ahead for good. The Scarlet Knights lost 6-4 earlier today to No. 8 Michigan State so the loser of tonight's matchup will take on the Spartans tomorrow at 7 p.m. Here's that recap from last night:
The Terps were tested in the opening round against the Spartans as despite having one of the best offenses in the country, Maryland was limited to three runs in a 3-2 victory over MSU. Here's a deep dive into the Terrapins and what to expect from them:
It'll be another good pitching matchup as RHP Nick Dean (3-1, 5.20 ERA) vs. RHP Jace Kaminska (7-3, 4.36 ERA). The Terps threw their Sunday starter Kyle McCoy on Tuesday, but he's been dealing with forearm issues so he only got through 0.2 innings. The bullpen had to carry the load, but they got an off day to rest up.
ICYMI, I broke down the Big Ten Tournament and all the big players to watch. Additionally, head coach Will Bolt and fifth-year reliever Kyle Perry spoke to the media ahead of going to Omaha. Here are those:
