B1G 2024 Penalties per team

The link is to a Google Sheet I put together showing B1G play for all of 2024.
When the team in column A played a team in row 2, the team in row 2 had 'X' penalties that game. Sums are at the bottom and far right.

1) Iowa was the most disciplined (or favored by refs) team with 26 penalties for 257 yards.
2) UCLA was the least disciplined (or disfavored by refs) with 75 penalties for 617 yards.
3) Ohio St's opponents were called for the fewest penalties when playing them with 27 for 231. Were the refs gunning for Ohio St. to lose and trying to help their opponents?
4) Maryland's opponents were called for the most penalties when playing them with 62 for 562. Were the refs trying to help Maryland?

What I'm really saying is that I hear a lot of "THE BIG 10 REFS ARE HORRIBLE! THEY ARE SCREWING US OVER...", but the data is what it is. UCLA, Maryland, Nebraska and Wisconsin were the least disciplined teams during conference play based on the stats. Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota and Ohio State were the most disciplined teams.

Feel free to share your thoughts on this.

Here’s the thing… you could show me a spreadsheet that shows that everybody had an equal amount of penalties and it wouldn’t show us anything.
If one team holds 30 times a game and doesn’t get called for it and both teams end the game with 8 penalties against them, was it called fairly?

If both teams were called for 8 penalties but one teams penalties were BS and called during pivotal points of the game, was it called fairly?

Doesn't show a ranking of whom was most penalized by big 10 refs.

If we had the crew from the Bowl, people would understand the flags and be okay with it.

I think you may have missed this in the OP:
"Ohio St's opponents were called for the fewest penalties when playing them with 27 for 23"
right, the flags just come out if the game is close..good point

Problem with OP/ fans like you . You see the stats after the game and see penalties were even or close to and you think the game was call fair/ equal. That’s not how it works all the time .

OP is a graduate from the Univ. of Nebraska in electrical engineering from 2006.
Calling Iowa most disciplined due to penalties called against them is suspect. Iowa and Wisconsin get away with a crap ton of offensive holding penalties not being called. Carry on.

It’s not always penalties. NU literally had a first down wipes away with officials spotting the ball almost 2 yards incorrectly against the bucknuts and the officials in the booth doubled down and did not call for a review. It’s not always 100% penalties

You are an idiot... Nebraska got jobbed more times than I have ever seen this year. It is the no calls as well. The refs sucked horribly this year and I am tired of idiots like you that act like they don't play a part in changing the momentum of a game.

Our head coach failed to challenge said play and allowed our OC to operate as if we were on the .5 yard line

Incompetence abounds

Only you would blame a blatent f up by the refs solely on the coach.

The whole scenario was hard to guage for a viewer, because no one knew what was going on cause the refs were so bad in that situation. It is on Matt Rhule though becsuse he needs to play God for folks like you

DBs holding, OL holding, incorrect spotting of the ball, inexplicable reviews, etc. all not going to show up in your data analysis.

Now do a spreadsheet with a point system for how bogus or legit each flag was and whether or not they scored/prevented scores on drives. I’m not knocking your spreadsheet by the way, this is a good start.

Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota and Ohio State were the least penalized or the “most disciplined”. (lol) Hit me up when a non traditional/original B1G member makes that list. I won’t hold my breath…

It’s amusing how Wisconsin suddenly stopped being “disciplined” right around the time the league no longer had commissioners who spent the better part of their day kissing Barry Alvarez’s butt.

Challenging a bad spot does not require devine intervention

Challenging a bad spot does not require devine intervention
If I remember correctly

- We got the first down
- Then as they were clearing the pile, I am sure Rhule was expecting the first down to be awarded and the time put back on the clock
- Instead as the pile cleared he had to take a timeout about 8 seconds after he would of if he didn't feel he got the first down.
- We call a timeout and the play was still not reviewed
- Big 10 gave their (It's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission) apology to Nebraska for how that game was officiated

Yet it Rhule's fault? You sir are wrong here and even if you feel Rhule should of made a bigger deal out of it the mistake was not him. He should of never been put in that situation to begin with. You are and always will be a pot stirring attention grabber making outlandish opinions just to get people like me to respond like this.

Here is the video (again) of that Ohio St game, and to be clear I know some of the calls could be ticky tack, but there is enough data in this video to show how bad this game was

Refs f up. Especially in our conference. They’re not paid $8M to challenge their own terrible calls.

I am talking about the bad spot on the goal line and subsequently allowing a goal line play to be run.

Just that one single blown situation by the refs and our coach was probably the difference in the game.

There is a solution to the issue of referee mistakes.

Simply stop televising every game. The only video you get are a few highlights from the biggest games that you have to record on your VCR if you want to watch again. You can also get a few still photos from newspapers covering the game. Of course, you also have to eliminate instant replay - no more “Call Stands” or “Call is Overturned”. Every call defaults to “Confirmed”.

Only then will we feel better about officials.

Nice attempt at humor, but it's really not funny to think back about a legitimate shot to beat the eventual national champ that was marred by blatantly bad calls. I still want to pull my face off when I think about Nebraska getting a first down by 2 yards and the ref spotting it a 1/2 yard short. Every single person watching the game saw it instantly. So, sorry not funny at all.

Again it’s simple the head official for the game must take questions from the media after the game, a lot of this crap might stop if the officials weren’t protected

Not all of my jokes land…

You probably got my overall point that the drama queens constantly wailing about officiating has gotten to the point of absurdity. Every reasonable sports fan knows some calls get missed - and we all hate it when it goes against us. But these tortured attempts to quantify some nefarious conspiracy that doesn’t exist has gotten silly.

Chief fans know what its like to have so many more penalties called against us, than the team we're playing. we get it. it's frustrating

scoring, grading, educating, removal, hiring, and adjusting seem sensible. having to put up with the same poor crews year after year seems crooked as hell to me. has to be plenty of good officials in the lower levels that could do a very adequate showing.

You're right. I don't think there's a conspiracy, just incompetence that really needs attention. There is literally a replay official in the booth in addition to "a massive new instant replay center in conference headquarters, meant to support in-game officials across the league." How TF do they miss something like a 3 yard spotting error? Holding is holding, but a play like that points to a huge issue. I think it's unintentional human bias to shade towards the conference favorites by conference staff. They're all pulling for a B1G champion, and losing to Nebraska would have completely eliminated OSU. There's no other explanation for an error that every viewer saw instantly in real time.

Next step - get Nebraska to a point where losing to them doesn’t leave a stain on your season :)

Refs typically do not mess up blatantly 10+ times in favor of one team in one game

Ya but the problem is if the officials in question are African American or a chick . Good luck in their removal.
