are we ignoring a local qb?

this is an interesting thought experiment

wouldn't have been "just Jett"

we'd still have Lateef, and last year we very well could've had the nation's leading passer (K McCord) leading our offensive attack
You don’t get to live in a world where you get to change one variable and everything else stays constant. It is unrealistic. Along those same lines, McCord doesn’t have the same stats at Nebraska as he does Syracuse. Different offense, different league. We could have had Jeanty as our top RB that doesn’t mean he even sniffs 1000 yards.

of course he wouldn't have. and that's not at all what I was doing.

without DR, it's highly likely McCord - who led the nation in passing at 'Cuse - is our QB last year.

sliding doors, Tuco. I get the sense you've been awfully bristly with me lately.

lighten up, pal. just because you despise local kids and would rather see zero NE players on the NU roster doesn't mean you have to get your thong twisted every time one gets brought up.

;)

Not about local kids at all. It’s simply about thinking that if you pick McCord over Dylan Raiola then every commitment stays the same. Heck if McCord only wins one more game last year perhaps Satterfield is still the OC. Then what? Again when you change one variable or one decision the subsequent consequences also change. This isn’t a vacuum.

Lateef committed in May of 2024.

before we played a single game, before Dana, etc.

maybe we should just shut this site down between the final snap of the season and opening kickoff of the next one?

that way we won't risk anybody daring to attempt to discuss anything.

We are in an age where a lot of kids are going to have to prove themselves at a lesser program before they get offers from P4 schools. You aren't going to see many 3 stars recruited by the big boys. They will go for the high 4 & 5 stars and then poach talent from the lower divisions.

This whole system sucks.
Nebraska kids are going to have to prove themselves. The level of competition in this state is far below the competition of the recruiting hotbeds. It is not even worth comparing it’s so far apart.

It was still after they chose Raiola over McCord

In the game of NU QB Butterfly Effect, say Rhule tells the legacy family no thanks, we have Kyle. SAY McCord wins a couple of more games, not outside of probability for sure. Satt is probably still OC, Holgerson is elsewhere and NU is probably trolling the portal for a QB. Instead, NU is building a room of young QBs and has both Glenn Thomas and Holgerson to develop them.

I don't think anyone could've gotten him to stay home when he had that Stanford scholarship in hand.

and I don't blame him for that.
He has said that if they had recruited him earlier he would have committed to NU. Who knows if that’s being completely honest. It gives him cover for having gone to Stanford. Can you imagine what an icon he would be in Nebraska if he had chosen NU and then had the NFL career he had? Water under the bridge. It worked out well for him.

I don't think McCord wins any more games than DR did last year

and if we're to believe what we've been told, Dana was on the OC radar before we played a game in 2024

definitely playing transfer roulette again in 2025

it's an interesting thing to ponder

It points back to what I’ve been saying about our QB room with the roster number limits. You can’t stockpile developmental/walkon QBs on your roster like everybody has in the past. In our case we’re probably going to have to offer a developmental QB to fill our needs and if we’re going to do that it might as well be a local kid who might stick around for several years. IMO IF this Bama offer is real, it’s to try to get a kid willing to be a backup for a few years realizing a couple of injuries or transfers and he could be the man at Alabama.

Yeah we have had that discussion before which we completely disagree on lol. But I definitely understand what you are saying. I just don't think I'll ever see it that way

That view in part is why I’m not worried about us offering Dayton. He’s not an area kid, but he is a legacy that likely will stick around for several years. He kind of fits the bill for what we need for depth. I just wish he was more athletic. I’m not losing any sleep over our QB recruiting. We just need to land enough guys to throw bodies out there and see who rises to the top. Think about all the QBs Callahan ran through. The best were a lightly recruited JUCO and a 2 star who was headed for a partial baseball scholarship had Nebraska not offered him. My suspicion is Dana could find a guy blindfolded. I’m pretty much done with star rankings on QBs.

I believe Rhule clearly made a decision based on the longer term. He has the potential to have the same QB for 4 years. When was the last time a P5 team had the same starter for 4 years? Tom and Tommie?

man. That’s an ugly thought🤔. I had a Dr pre-op reply to me, “man those are some really dark thoughts. I like your sense of humor. We gotta have some beers sometime”. I told him I always gave instructions to the neighbor what to do with my cattle “if I die in a fiery crash”. BUT that’s nothing compared to the scenario you just painted.

Picking Raiola was the easy long term decision. There is no doubt it has had an overall positive effect on recruiting. wrt Holgerson, I’m sure Rhule had a hard sell going on, but the prospect of being able to have Raiola in an offense he gets to develop was a sweetener.

So because previous coaches made bad evaluations on QBs the current one and future ones shouldn't attempt to get their best guy? Just take the best local guy instead?

Well, I'm not really saying that. I'm fine with trusting the evaluation our staff has made. These guys are getting in on guys early and really look like they are out there evaluating. I'm just stating how I feel philosophically, but I'm not arguing that we should be recruiting any specific player over anyone else. In general, I still feel that recruiting in-state talent and building out is how you fill a class.

If there are other guys who they rate higher from far away places, fine go after them but you better get them. Too often, time was wasted chasing guys and coming in 2nd or top 4. That killed us-- of course now, with so many instant transfers I suppose there's more value in coming in as runner up for a recruit than there used to be.

The Nebraska coaching staff hasn't developed a player two decades.

that would be Frost and AM.

before that Tommy Armstrong was a 4 year starter.

before that Taylor Martinez.

we've had a bunch.

Yeah, it's not a good thing. If the guy isn't in the NFL after starting 3 years, he wasn't elite. Taylor was probably the best on this list but he was special because of speed and the offense we ran.

Not sure if AM is still on the Jets roster or not. TM would have had to play WR to stick in the NFL. His accuracy and ball security wasn’t good. Unfortunately for him his injury history probably prevented him from getting much of a shot and I really don’t think he loved football.

Per his Wiki page, Martinez signed a reserve/future contract with the Jets on January 6, 2025.

Training camp arm at the very least. He looked much improved in the UFL with a head coach who could coach QBs.

I hear ya and I do understand that logic. If I'm being honest in the current landscape I'm not sure it can work that way. I'm not sure there is enough talent instate to take maybe 5 in state kids of a class of say 12-15. Of course you can't put a number on it because it will fluctuate year to year but with the way the portal opens up so many other avenues I think states like Nebraska without a huge population will be extremely selective. More so than before. I also think it's going to get ugly if we don't win soon because we will lose some of these guys in state to an Iowa or an ISU or a Minnesota or or Kansas and they may end up playing significant minutes at those places. If we are winning it won't be near as bad but if we are losing it'll be hard for coaches to bare.

I don't envy HCMR situation in this environment. It's damned if you do and damned if you don't. The only thing that saves him is winning...PERIOD. I think he understands that for sure now. I also think he THINKS his way will be the best way to accomplish that. Nebraska fans don't wanna win 7 games they wanna win 10, 11, or 12. The problem is can you do that with maybe 33%(random number for example). of you HS recruits being instate kids? At some point something has to give. So end of the day just win and idc care if you have 100 guys from Nebraska or 100 guys from outta state. WINNING ...should be what matters most.
