Offensive play calling?

Some poor play calling (especially on 3rd downs) could easily be the difference between a Successful season and where were at now.

Just a few tweaks and we'd still look pretty bad but we'd have a great record.

Maybe Riley calling plays could help out?
Has he called plays any previous jobs?

I actually thought the play calling was alright. Drop half the passes we did and we win. Possibly by two scores.

Hard to run power when our OL gets dominated. Our best position group on offense is our WRs so getting them the ball is our best shot at winning. Unfortunately our QB and RBs are terribly inconsistent and our OL are soft.

I can deal with all that but i saw worse then that. I saw players that didn't want to win. I'm still trying to wrap my head around what i saw in person Saturday afternoon.

Yeah I saw a lot of that myself as well. No leadership among the players unfortunately. Riley even mentioned to a few guys from the 95 team that the lack of intensity at practice this week was concerning.

But that is part of the play calling. As TO used to say: only 3 things can happen when you throw a pass and two of them are bad. Passing is simply more risky and that is especially the case with a QB that doesn't throw well. Yes, we had some drops, but drops are part of the game. Far more concerning are the number of badly thrown balls, the missed wide open receivers and the need to force the ball.

I encourage the OP to go back and watch the game film. I originally thought the play calling was suspect but after rewatching Illinois, Wisconsin, and Northwestern with pausing and watching in slow motion I realized we have guys open on EVERY play. Tommy either a) can't get it to them effectively or b) stares down and chucks it up to a guy that is supposed to be running someone off. In addition our line gets beat, A LOT on running plays. the seldom times we have effectively blocked the opposing team, Newby has one guy to beat to get to the end zone and often times he runs right into the guy and gets tackled where last year Ameer would have taken it to the house. The play calling is solid our struggles on offense are because we don't have the personnel to run the schemes effectively. Riley and Co. are not going to change for this current team. They want to implement their schemes and get the younger guys accustomed to it so that we can be successful in the future, it is what 99.99% of all other coaches in the would have done. For me this season can be summed up in one phrase. Square pegs in round holes.

It says something then, that passing being so risky, was by far more effective for us this week.

passing might be the least risky thing you do, if your OL is just going to take a dive in the run game.

I guess to me it's more concerning when your best position group on the team has as many drops as it did than an average qb playing poorly. TA looks much better when his throws are actually caught (and they were good throws, easy to catch).

I understand drops can happen, but there's no way for an OC to plan for drops and when they're going to happen. So 7 of TA's passes were on the money. Those WRs who had drops failed to do their jobs.

Lastly, only 3 things can happen when you run the ball as well and two of them are also bad. Winking

It's just me but I hate passing on 3rd & 2 all of the time. Bad line Bad backs equals pass on 3rd and 2.

Nah, it is just easier to have a party at your house, keep one eye on the game and one eye elsewhere, and then come here after the loss and say the playcalling sucks. I watch the tape after each game at least once. During the pick 6 play Newby was initially wide open in the flat. If TA checks down and throws a catchable pass the first down was there and then some. I think we should have run there, but the dump off pass was there. Everybody says our screens don't work, but we had a beautiful screen set up and TA threw a ground ball. There was a play in the first half where a hole opened to the left almost as big as the hole on the TD run vs Minny, but Newby plowed into the pile for no gain. I agree with you that Langs calls a pretty good game.

This is why the season is ultra frustrating. I believe the talent is there and I DO NOT BELIEVE the schemes are bad. Something is just not clicking.

I would agree execution is the biggest issue - and the playcalling is in part a reaction to not having the Oline run blocking effectively. But execution on D is also a problem - on the called blitzes - we almost NEVER get a guy free - either the teams we have played are just fantastic at picking up blitzes or we don't have guys that can get off blocks (or avoid them all together) when we send a LB or safety. Outside of Collins - that dude gets off blocks. Freedom played this week but did not see much impact from him.

If the offense had got more points out of possessions we had the first 3 quarters - the lapses in the 4th Qrt by the D would not have mattered.

Yeah, more people should be sitting at home watching the game alone...with a note pad...taking notes.

I don't think play calling is the problem. I re-watch a lot of games, and we have a lot of open receivers that TA just can't get the ball to. Our RB situation is a mess. Newby can't break a tackle at all. OL has it's own set of issues. Just look at Langsdorf's face when TA comes to the sideline, even after a good play. You can tell that TA is not getting the job done.

You know damn well I'm not suggesting that. I'm saying before I get on the board after the game and blast people, I spend a few minutes with the tape so I am informed what I am talking about.

Agree- I don't post a lot on here until Sunday night or Monday for that very reason. I'd be posting way too many knee jerk reactions.

Exactly...we keep passing on 3rd and short. It doesn't go as planned. Something bad and unexpected happens and it's another 3 and out. I know cross or Janovich can get 2 yards even with a bad oline

My question is why is the O line so bad at run blocking? My guess is because they have over worked the timing passing game and because of that they are not good at run blocking. Square peg round hole.

Riley called the plays up until 2008 I believe then Langsdorf took over and the offense tanked in 2011 and 2012 especially Riley then took over again and then Langsdorf left when he had a chance

It surprised me when he hired him here and gave him playcalling duties

Read this article it sounds very familiar to here - passing on third and short and this is when they had Rodgers ( their AA) problems with Oline not being physical. Sometimes things do not change

I'd rather see him take over at Miami, or USC or South Carolina or anyplace but here.

Heck, if that space cadet linebacker makes a tackle on their QB before half and he doesn't rumble into field goal range, we win.
