I keep reading a lot of people wanting to let go of Tim Miles and they seem to think we can then go pluck a coach from somewhere else so easily like we have our choice.
I understand if you are a bigger fan than I and want more but here are a couple truths. I'm somewhat of an outsider peaking in. So...
We aren't a destination school.
When was the last time a coaches career ended well here? Sure we have a good facility and an active fan base with an Athletic Department ready to spend money but nothing comes of it. I'm not sure how you're going to get a semi big name coach to come here with that track record.
There is no good history.
We have never won an NCAA tournament game. When I spoke to my father on the subject he said it is where coaches careers come to die. Unfortunately I have seen this happen at a couple schools trying to up their game as I am an Arizona State alum. I've seen coaching hire after coaching hire that's supposed to be an upgrade and it doesn't work out. Don't think most coaches and their agents don't know these things as well.
Trying to hire the next big thing is tough.
You see it year after year in college football and it applies to college basketball as well. Trying to find a guy that has done well at a smaller school in a smaller conference try to take the next step up is not easy. I would like to say the failure rate it close to 80%.
Even if you get that guy. He gone.
Unless you're ready to throw BIG BIG money at the coach like a big program we would be a stepping stone. If someone really came here and got us to the tournament won us a few games in the tournament he gets plucked by a bigger basketball program when they need a coach.
I could make an argument that a fair share of mid major programs are more attractive.
So just remember these things when you get ready to jump ship and think there is a huge upgrade available.
Yes I would like to see more happen and be more consistent. If it is a system thing then it won't change and a change is needed. If not I hope that Miles can change a couple things. It seems to me that there is a fair amount of talent on the team. I'm not sure what the total problem is. I would be happy to be enlightened.
