A point that one of the announcers made in the Sugar Bowl is that Alabama actually ended up with an advantage because they didn't have to play in a Conference Championship game. It allowed the players to take a little more time off and get healthy, and gave the coaches more time to recruit and a little more prep time. It was just like a bye for one of top teams in the NFL.
They really need to have a rule that says the only way you are eligible for the playoffs is if you win your Conference Championship, especially if they want to keep it at a 4 team playoff.
