I hope in today's game that Langsdorf/Riley do not stubbornly stick to trying to establish the run if it isn't working. Use what works, and if that means throwing the ball 50 times then so be it. For better or for worse we are more of a passing team than a running team, and our offensive line, though awful in the running game, has been far better in pass protection. We need this win badly and if we need to pass a ton in order to win then we should.

Of course, having no running game is a bad thing insofar as it sets up NW to just pin their ears back and go after Tanner. Hopefully, that pass rush can be somewhat neutralized by a good screen game and passes to the backs as outlets like Lee did with Ozigbo on that last drive last week. I have been critical of Ozigbo's skill set, but damn that kid was a baller on that drive and showed he had good hands and football smarts.

Come on guys! Beat Northwestern! We can do this.

Would like to see them stretch the field on the ground more often. Bradley did well bouncing outside last week. Don't see that much anymore.

If we mix up the plays and Bradley is carrying the ball, we'll be fine in the ground game. Otherwise, TL's arm may need ice after the game. Get the W!

If we air it out all game, what is the over/under on picks and pick-six's?

Picks - 4.5
Pick-Six - 1.5

Lee has been much better lately with the management of the offensive turnovers, but when we have to pass a ton, Langs will probably go back to the plays that are more prone to INTs.

I am a fan of whatever helps us win!

I'd like to see us throw the ball 40+ times today.
I agree 100%. The fact is we have now played enough games this season to know our strengths and weaknesses. And the most glaring weakness is the inability of our line to effectively run block. I don't see the point of trying to pound a square peg into a round hole at this point. And Riley knows he is coaching for his job right now. So my guess is he will try to establish the run early, but if it fails he will air it out

Call it more than a hunch, but you should be pleasantly surprised then. Gonna be Tanner Favre today. Which shouldnt be too big a surprise given NW defensive statistics.

Northwestern has one of the worst pass defenses and one of the best run defenses in the country. Let it fly
Do they really have a great run defense? Or do teams have so much success passing against them that it makes their run defense stats look better? Serious question. I haven't seen them play once this year

Good point I forgot to mention. NW has a lousy pass defense
Good pass rush though against freshmen on the right side and a walk on center.......Lee has to get rid of it quickly if he passes. We need some semblance of a run game to try to keep them honest. We ran the ball ok against Wisconsin at times. We can run it some on NW.

I agree, even the 95 pipeline was not expected to flip flop from run to pass blocking every other play. If we are going to be pass happy, be pass happy. It may even open up the run...the way the run opened up the pass for Dr. Tom.

Wisc ran on them 37 times for 109 yards. Iowa ran it 33 times for 89 yards. And Barkley broke off a 53 yard run on them but finished with 17 carries and 75 yards. They’re stout.

A 95/5 run/pass ratio looks like the ticket to me.

Sure making yourself one dimensional and easier to defend makes it easier on the defense even if you are going after their weakness. Brilliant...this kind of thinking from the coaching staff has delivered losses in the past like Purdue 2 years ago...

We aren't "making ourselves one dimensional". We ARE one dimensional. That is the point you are missing that some of us are trying to make. It is not as if Riley hasn't tried to establish the run. He has and failed. We can't run the ball. Period. So pass it.

Yes! Could be fun. ... or a total shitfest of interceptions! Lol

Tanner has significantly cut down on his interceptions. Not to jinx him, but it’s possible he’s shaken the rust off and is just going to continue to improve. Hopefully we can build a solid team around him for next year

I agree. Too bad Tanner walked into a situation where the OL stinks almost as bad as his previous team. He's starting to get comfortable and getting the ball out quickly so maybe we'll have a fighting chance today?

So let's assume for the sake of argument that Frost is our coach next year. Does Frost implement his style of offense right away? If yes, Lee won't be our starter. Off topic for the thread I know. But heck... these days all roads have Frost in them

I think Tanner will be the starter next year regardless of who the coach is. We don't have anyone more capable of running the spread offense efficiently. Gebbia might not even be here next year and POB isn't a big enough step up in run threat from Tanner to overcome the rest of his deficiencies. And more than that, trying to implement a true spread offense next year will be the equivalent of Callahan's first year trying to go WCO with an option QB. Option football (even spread read) is something that takes more than one off-season to really be good at and I could be wrong but I don't think we have a QB on our roster that has ever run spread. It won't be pretty. A Frost offense for the next few years would probably have to consist be a pass heavy version of what Oregon has run in the pass. Hopefully it works with no QB run threat.

Yeah, I guess that is the deeper point. We don't have ANY quarterbacks on our roster who could run Frost's offense.

They were talking about Nebraska’s innability to run the ball for quite a few years now on 1620 yesterday afternoon in the 3 pm hour.

I didn’t catch how far back someone looked (I was under the impression more than just this year) but they took away sacks and QB taking a knee (which count against rushing yards) and in over 40% of Nebraska’s true rushing attempts have been 2 yards or less.

If someone knows there source of what they were quoting, it’d be interesting to see it.

Hate that we're in this position but it seems to be our strength so why not use it?

Our approach I think it equally important. Come out with nothing to lose and be aggressive, stop trying to play checkers with the opposing sideline because that clearly wont work.
