I was thinking about our DEs yesterday as I was driving and how nice it would be to have someone who is an athletic freak with a few moves to get to the opposing QBs or at least garner a double team on most passing downs. Then I thought about Freedom and how he flashed some speed/athleticism last year but this year he seemed much slower and probably too big. M. Newby fell into this category last year as well. I typically cringe whenever I hear someone say "let's get them in here and but some weight on them" with regard to new players or young players - similar to the talk when we moved to the BIG that we needed to get big to be able to play in that conference. It drove me nuts! So, I ask the question, are there any examples of players (not a true OL) putting on significant weight in a short time and actually enhancing their performance? Grant Wistrom comes to mind as he was pretty skinny when he came in but I don't think he put on a bunch of weight in one off-season, it was over his career.
