AD Dannen Gets It

I like Friday night games for selfish reasons but am not a fan based on what it did to Lincoln overall. It turned Lincoln kind of upside down in order to facilitate a Friday game.

UNL had remote classes on Friday as did many workplaces downtown. I'm haven't read how it affected retail sales at restaurants, bars & shops but I would guess it meant fewer sales for many as they did not have a full gameday of patrons. Many high schools moved their games to Thursday night, etc. I haven't read what traffic & parking was like.

I don't give a crap if its Saturday or a Friday here or there. It all works out. Win the dam games we should win against teams that have no business beating Nebraska. IL is not a better team. They just know how to beat us. Hang around and wait for the mistakes.

I find this interesting on so many levels. First of all full disclosure I don't like Friday games.

I say interesting because I honestly thought most on here liked it just because night games are the only way to go. I thought people that were against it on here previously were ridiculed.

Interesting because I didn't really know we had a choice in the matter and if we did that's on Dannen because we previously told b1g to pound sand.

I agree we've been doing Friday games forever after Thanksgiving...that's our contribution.

I also understand especially with adding 4 more teams that someone has to do it. I haven't looked but would be surprised if tOSU plays Fridays....hint hint...win more games get more say. Hurts recruiting.

I hated the Friday night game simply because the heartbeat of Nebraska in the fall are our rural communities who rally around the local high school games and then get together the next day to cheer on our Huskers

...thats totally fair, and I can be talked into no more for this reason...I was being selfish and not looking at it like that

Good points..Mine is the 4 PAC 12 teams joined our conference and the PAC 12 had played plenty of Friday night games in that conference so give them 4 some Friday night games…They joined the B1G for a reason so tough nookies that their games have to start 5:00 pacific time..

If I lived in Lincoln I would prefer to keep them on Saturday for many reasons.

My question is why we all had to know he sent a letter? Do we know about every letter sent or just ones that are important to his public view?

NFL plays on Thursdays. It's a pro league now, they need the exposure to justify the TV contracts. Tradition is not relevant anymore. Grow up people. Sheesh.

Other factors aside, if we can't win the Thur/Fri games, I'd rather stick to Sat games. I don't have the time to do the research, but I sense the team's record is pretty abysmal on Thurs/Fri games in recent history. I know we are 2-9 vs Iowa since 2013, and had the painful losses last year to Minn on Thurs last year and this year to IL on Fri. It lowers my interest to follow football over the weekend knowing the Huskers already are in the L column before Sat even starts, which I hate.

Probably because he was getting letters and they probably weren't early holiday greeting cards

This made me agree, AND laugh...we live in the day of worrying about nondisclosure...

he mentioned it publicly because multiple other ADs in the conference have already successfully lobbied the league to not play Friday home games.

I am assuming he the Athletic department fielded lot of phone calls and emails about this . Most probably were against the game on Friday. So Troy is telling the fan base I heard you and will try to take care of it.

can we just leave this stupid conference already?

we were never a good fit...

I'm out before all the money excuses come rolling in.

If our stadium was not on campus the logistics would be moot. But shutting down classes clearing out the space for education for tailgating makes it more difficult.
The VAST majority of tailgating happens off campus.

I can't see how having 1 class online instead of in person is some huge difficult inconvenience.

Almost every lot on campus is a booster lot on game days . And all the parking garages downtown were full of normal Friday parking. Where are all the football fans expected to park. Not as an easy inconvenience as you thought maybe.

Win or stfu. We have zero leverage to demand anything so I have my doubts the Big 10 will care. Black Friday game isn't really pertinent. These Friday games were part of the overall tv package that we benefit financially from. I doubt anyone paid extra for our black Friday game with Iowa. I do suppose one could argue we provide good value with eyeballs despite our shitty performance on the field.

Yep. For off-campus stadiums, it wouldn't be a big deal. Bringing 90,000+ people on campus on a Friday is.

True. Very true. I don't think the top teams play Friday games. Eickhorst did it. Alberts said no. Dannen either didn't say anything, or didn't get it stopped.

I know a lot on here don't care about anything that doesn't directly impact them or if it does, they don't care if it doesn't adversely affect them. So consequently could care less about high schools and how it affects Nebraska high school games. But there's already a shortage of officiating crews. So much that some games have been moved to Thursday and crews are doing back to back nights and then some do Saturday college games in the state. Makes it hard to do college visits for athletes on Friday night games as well which hurts everyone.

schedule was already set when Dannen took his post

he's doing the right thing, in my opinion, and I hope he continues to lobby for it

keep Friday nights for high school football in NE

Was he? He very well could have been. When did we hire him? I thought schedule dates came out in March or April

I get it. It's screwy. I did just look it up and we were still the 4th most watched team in the Big ten last year. We will likely fall to 6th this year.

Looks like our Friday game had the most viewers of any programming Friday, which unfortunately doesn't help us in ditching Friday games. Also found it interesting that we drew the same number of viewers last year as OU. For anyone wondering why USC is in the Big Ten, USC Michigan was the highest rated CBS CFB game in 10 years.
