It doesn't take a genius to understand we kept it insanely vanilla tonight. I mean Kalu came off the edge twice and other than that we brought 3 all night. Obviously, that's not gonna' cut it going forward, but I'm sure Bob and co understand that. With that said, here some things I took away from the performance or lack there of tonight.
- We miss Chris Jones badly. Obviously the scheme didn't do our corners any favors, but Lamar and Eric Lee made zero plays. Dicaprio Bootle on the other hand flashed. No question he was the best CB tonight.
- Marcus Newby is a problem. Unfortunately we have no answer I can see. Maybe play Tyrin at the DOG and Gifford at the CAT? Idk the answer, but he was lost all night long. He doesn't have a prayer against Oregon.
- Dedrick, Mo Barry, and Kalu all played admirably. Kalu especially.
- Thank God the B1G West is allergic to the spread offense.
- Outside of the final 3 minutes of the 4th, the D gave up 3 second half points and 20 points total. If we keep the ball on the ground at midfield on 2nd and 5 with 6 minutes left in the 4th, the narrative tonight is very different. Instead Danny got cute, we throw 2 incompletions and punt.
- Absolutely no pass rush to speak of. I gotta imagine we'll be more creative next week. We won't really have a choice.
All in all, we have a ton to clean up. Imo we only have two serious deficiencies personnel wise, and both are our outside LB's.
