A "brick by brick manifesto

OP is experienced in handling transitions. Sounds like we should have hired OP. Kidding to some degree, but because someone has experience in handling difficult situations, please do not project your expertise onto someone else.

In other words, "I have nothing to counter what you posted."

In other words, "I have nothing to counter what you posted."

You may have nothing to offer.

Laying out potential ways to handle a transition neither makes Mike Riley an expert in handling transitions, nor does it make Mike Riley competent in handling transitions.

Mike Riley transitions:

1st Stint at OrSU
Takes over OrSU from Jerry Pettibone who resigned after the 1996 season. Mike Riley goes 3-8 (0-8 conference) his first year, goes 5-6 (2-6 conference) his second year. Jerry Pettibone went 4-7 (2-6 conference) for two out of his 6 years. Jerry Pettibone has three 1 win seasons, and a 2 win season. Mike Riley takes part in two recruiting cycles and is not FULLY responsible for signing either of the two recruiting classes.

-1997 Jerry Pettibone and Mike Riley players. Pettibone resigned after the season was over.
-1998 Mike Riley players I would guess for the most part, Dennis Erickson is coach at signing. Riley leaves for the San Diego chargers.

San Diego Chargers
Riley is fired after 3 season with the Chargers with a record of 14 -34.

2nd Stint at OrSU
Mike Riley inherits a program from Dennis Erickson. Dennis Erickson took OrSU bowling 3 out of 4 years (previous OrSU bowl appearance was 25 years prior, note Mike Riley is part of that 25 years that never saw a bowl). Dennis Erickson goes 11-1 in 2000, some credit is given Erickson for signing talented JUCO players.

So there is what Mike Riley INHERITED in his second stint. As the Dennis Erickson era luster has faded at OrSU, so did what Mike Riley was able to accomplish at OrSU.

I have no reason to believe that Mike Riley has anything beyond average transitioning skills.

Post of the year Butch. Thanks for posting this over here. Really should make people think.
Except for NGII. He's already made up his mind. And when he's tired of trolling the board he can fall back on his favorite team, Florida.

Apples to apples.
Just got to whip those recruits into shape.
No more excuses Riley.

You don't have to worry about him anymore.

if he culture issues are as deep as are now being claimed, i wish we had hired the 66 year old from coastal carolina instead of who we did.

Didn't think there was wanting wrong with his posts (as of late). Jmo though....

For the most part he was ok but his act wore thin when he admitted to trolling in a few threads a while back and was an ass in a couple threads where people were trying to be positive.

We're not his team. He's admitted that he has fun trolling our board. Lots of repetitive negative post about our head coach. You know it's one thing if one if our own says something. It's another when an outsider constantly slams.

At some point NGII just needs to say his point and leave it at that. All this other stuff is just noise. After a while it's fatiguing.

I figured Riley would be a perfect guy for reclaiming any guys who were anti-NU or disenchanted with their current situation. At this point, I think I was wrong. Either the culture is really as bad as it appears on the playing field relative to commitment, buy-in and passion or Riley is eventually going to fail as the replacement for Bo Pelini.

With that said, I would agree with your post whole-heartedly. As it relates to attacking and changing a culture of this type I would think that Moglia would've been a good transition, "brick by brick" type of coach.

Good call.
